Tom Baker Averages 255 to Lead First Round in PBA50 Treasure Island Resort & Casino Open

Four-time PBA50 Player of the Year Tom Baker averaged 255 to lead the first round of the PBA50 Treasure Island Resort & Casino Open presented by MOTIV Monday at Island Xtreme Bowl.

Trying for his second win of the season, the PBA Hall of Famer had a 2,046 eight-game pinfall total with games of 276, 280, 246, 206, 248, 279, 255 and 256 to lead Michael Shequin of Orange City, Fla., in second with 1,989.

“The (lane) condition seems to be holding up pretty well but the transition came into play in the fourth game and I adjusted by going to a stronger ball,” said Baker, who won the PBA50 Greater Birmingham Open in April for his 10th career PBA50 Tour title. “Everyone looks for the transition about the fourth or fifth game and you just need to be prepared to make a ball change or some other adjustment, but overall the condition is holding up so you don’t have to make any radical moves to the inside.”

Rounding out the top eight in the final tournament of the season are Ted Staikoff, 1,966; Hall of Famer Pete Weber, 1,959; Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. and Dale Traber tied for fifth with 1,929; two-time PBA50 Player of the Year Ron Mohr, 1,903 and Scott Lindsey, 1,883.

Williams, who clinched his second consecutive PBA50 Player of the Year crown in last week’s Senior/Super Senior Doubles Classic, and Amleto Monacelli, who is not competing this week, have already clinched berths for the PBA50 Tour Finals which will be conducted in early November as part of World Series of Bowling V at the South Point Hotel, Casino and Bowling Center in Las Vegas.

One more spot for the finals remains available for the finals with Lennie Boresch Jr. currently holding the third spot with Weber three points behind in fourth.

Competition continues with another eight-game qualifying round on Tuesday after which the field will be cut to the top 24 for Wednesday’s match play rounds. Championship rounds are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. CT on Wednesday.
