In a finals dominated by Korean players, reigning PBA Player of the Year Sean Rash, trying for his second International PBA Tour title, finished third in the It’s Daejeon International Open World Bowling Tour tournament Saturday in Daejeon, Korea.
Kim Jun Yung of Korea, who finished second in the 2011 World Series of Bowling Scorpion Championship, won his first title by defeating fellow countryman Kim Jae Hoon 237-200 in the championship match. Rash, qualified third for the TV finals but lost in the three-player semifinal with a 186 to Hoon’s 227. Kim Tae Young of Korea bowled a 169 to finish fourth.
Rash who led a contingent of six U.S. PBA Tour players competing in the event, won the Kuwait Open in March for his first title of the season and sixth of his career. After the combined second round, Tommy Jones finished ninth, Tom Smallwood, 18th, Mika Koivuniemi, 19th, Josh Blanchard, 21st and Scott Newell, 59th.
Rash, along with Koivuniemi and Mike Fagan are among the top three in World Bowling Tour points. With four tournaments remaining in 2013, the top three after the two-season cumulative point standings will earn the opportunity to compete in the ESPN-televised World Bowling Tour finals as part of the World Series of Bowling V in November at the South Point in November. The women’s WBT finals will also be conducted as part of World Series of Bowling V.
In the all-Korea Women’s Division final , Kang Soo Jin defeated Kang Hyun Jin 226-214 for the title. In the semifinal Jin defeated Jeon Eun Hee 224-203 to advance to the championship match.
