PBA Tour competitor Thomas Larsen of Denmark led a field of 42 qualifiers who advanced into the final elimination rounds of the Abu Dhabi World Bowling Tour event at Khalifa Bowling Center in UAE. Larsen, with a nine-game qualifying total of 2,284 pins in Round 1 earlier this week, was among eight players who earned byes through three elimination rounds. Larsen is trying for his first PBA title.
Also among the top eight Round 1 qualifiers who earned byes all the way to Friday’s Round 4 were England’s Dom Barrett and Sweden’s Martin Larsen. Other PBA Tour qualifiers who advanced out of Thursday’s Round 3 included Finland’s Mika Koivuniemi and Osku Palermaa, and Mike Fagan of Fort Worth, Texas.
The 20 players remaining in contention in Abu Dhabi will bowl a six-game Round 4 Friday, with the top seven along with the highest-qualifying UAE player advancing to a modified stepladder final Friday afternoon. Match one will include qualifiers six, seven and eight in a one-game shootout match with the winner advancing to match two. Match two will be another one-game shootout contest including the match one winner plus qualifiers four and five. The final three one-game matches will involve match winners vs. qualifiers No. 3, 2 and 1 (for the title).
The Abu Dhabi WBT is the first of three WBT/PBA International Tour events in the Middle East in December that will conclude the PBA’s 2012-13 season. The final two events will be the Qatar Open at Qatar Bowling Centre in Doha, Qatar, Dec. 4-10, and the 7th International Kingdom Open at Universal Bowling Center, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Dec. 11-16.
All three events will be World Bowling Tour points competitions and each will award a PBA International Tour title if the winner is a PBA member.

The second episode of “The Bowling Center,” featuring PBA Xtra Frame personalities Jason (The Bowling Guy) Thomas and Jef Goodger is now available on YouTube, featuring a recap of last Sunday’s Cheetah Championship telecast on ESPN and including a preview of next Sunday’s Viper Championship presented by PBA Bowling Challenge.
The Cheetah recap show features a “top 10 favorite bowling calls/bowler celebrations” segment, a Mike J. Laneside interview with Patrick Allen, a three-game match between Goodger and Thomas, another “Troll Bowling” segment and a Viper Championship presented by PBA Bowling Challenge preview.

PBA REGIONAL ROUNDUP: PATTERSON REPEATS IN BEAUMONT
● Andy Patterson of Tyler, Texas, dominated the final three games of round robin match play to successfully defend his PBA Beaumont Southwest Open presented by Roto Grip title Sunday at Mark Williams’ Crossroads Bowling Center in Beaumont, Texas.
Patterson won six of his first seven matches to join a tightly-bunched leader board and easily won his last three games to run away from the field, claiming the $2,700 first place check and his fourth PBA Southwest Region title. Patterson finished with a 25-game total of 5,822 pins, including match play bonus pins, to top PBA rookies Shawn Maldonado of Houston by 51 pins and Anthony Lavery of Pasadena, Texas, by 57 pins.
● Brandon Novak of Chillicothe, Ohio, defeated Ernie Segura of Taylor, Mich., 237-208, to win his first PBA Regional title in the La-Z-Boy/Monroe Sport Center Non-Champions Central Open presented by Columbia 300 at Monroe (Mich.) Sport Center Sunday.
The tournament was open to PBA members who do not hold a PBA title or non-members who have never won a PBA event.
● The PBA Regional program’s holiday season gets underway with a PBA and PBA50 doubleheader presented by Storm at Shore Lanes in Merritt Island, Fla., over the Dec. 6-8 weekend.
The Dec. 13-15 weekend features a PBA/PBA50 West/Northwest/Southwest tri-regional at the National Bowling Stadium, sponsored by the Sands Regency in Reno, Nov., and the PBA South Region’s Decker Appraisal Services Over 50/Under 50 Doubles event presented by Hammer at Wayne Lanes in Waynesboro, Va.
The final pre-Christmas tournament will be the PBA/PBA50 Bowling Dynamix Southwest Doubles presented by Hammer at Emerald Bowl in Houston over the Dec. 20-22 weekend.
