DOHA, Qatar – England’s Dom Barrett defeated Sweden’s Mattias Olsson, 515-467, in the two-game title match of the Qatar Open at Qatar Bowling Center Tuesday.
Barrett spotted Olsson a 12-pin lead after their 269-257 first game, but dominated game two, 258-198, to capture the $42,000 first prize and a PBA International Tour title.
Barrett advanced to the title match by defeating last week’s Abu Dhabi WBT winner, Thomas Larsen of Denmark, 459-438, while Olsson eliminated Robert Morris University-Illinois collegiate star Cameron Weier of Federal Way, Wash., 413-392, in the semifinal round.
Barrett is a finalist in the PBA Chameleon Championship telecast which will air Sunday on ESPN at 1 p.m. ET and he is the top qualifier for the PBA World Championship finals that air on ESPN on Sunday, Dec. 29, at 1 p.m. ET.
Other PBA players among the cashers included Mike Fagan, Fort Worth, Texas, fifth; Osku Palermaa, Finland, sixth; Tommy Jones, Simpsonville, S.C., seventh; Bill O’Neill, Langhorne, Pa., 13th; Tim Mack, Indianapolis, 15th; Martin Larsen, Sweden, 16th; Mika Koivuniemi, Finland, 18th; Andrew Frawley, Australia, 21st, and Paul Moor, England, 24th.
Two other members of Robert Morris University-Illinois’ top-ranked collegiate team – junior Marshall Kent of Yakima, Wash. and senior Matt Gasn of Laurel, Md. – finished eighth and 10th, respectively. Kent, a two-time Collegiate Bowler of the Year, recently competed in PBA World Series of Bowling V on a PBA Commissioner’s Exemption, and was the leading qualifier in the PBA Scorpion Championship that will air on ESPN on Sunday, Dec. 22, at 3:30 p.m. ET.
The 2012-13 PBA Tour season will conclude with the 7th International Kingdom Open at Universal Bowling Center, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Dec. 11-16. The International Kingdom Open, along with the Abu Dhabi WBT and Qatar Open, are World Bowling/PBA International Tour events. All three are part of the two-year, rolling World Bowling Tour points competition.
