ALLEN PARK, Mich. – Behind consecutive strikes by Tommy Jones, Pete Weber and Scott Norton, Billie Jean King’s New York City WTT KingPins defeated the top qualifying team, Kevin Hart’s Philadelphia Hitmen, 222-198, to win the PBA League Carmen Salvino round at Thunderbowl Lanes.

The second of five rounds of PBA League competition aired Sunday on ESPN.

With their win in the Salvino round, the KingPins (John Szczerbinski, Jack Jurek, Jones, Weber and Norton) earned 12 points toward the Elias Cup finals, which will be held March 31 at Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis. After two events, the KingPins lead Jesse Williams’ BROOKLYN STyLES in the points race, 24-20.

“This was a blast for me,” Weber, the KingPins’ franchise player, said. “There was no choice but to have Scott (Norton) bowl anchor. He was the hottest bowler in the building during the Detroit Winter Swing. And I wanted John (Szczerbinski) to lead off because he’s that good. He showed us where we needed to throw the ball and that’s what we fed off of.”

Szczerbinski is an experienced team competitor as a Team USA member and a former collegiate All-American at Wichita State.

In the semifinal match, Jurek, Jones, Weber and Norton put together a string of four strikes which helped the KingPins topple the hometown-favorite Motown Muscle, 225-192.

In the opening match, Norton struck in the fifth frame and three times in the 10th to lock up a 223-191 win over Terrell Owens’ Dallas Strikers. The Strikers, who finished eighth in the Salvino qualifying round, earned their berth in the stepladder finals when Rhino Page out-lasted a field of 11 in the Clash eliminator, where each player threw one ball and the lowest scoring player was eliminated until only one player remained. Page nipped the Silver Lake Atom Splitters’ Chris Barnes, 10-9, in the final round to win the elimination event.

Next Sunday’s 3 p.m. ET ESPN telecast of the PBA League Mark Roth round will include Jerome Bettis’ Motown Muscle, the KingPins, the BROOKLYN STyLES and the team that survives the Clash eliminator round.
