SWEDEN’S SVENSSON WINS BALLMASTER OPEN, O’NEILL THIRD

Sweden’s Jesper Svensson defeated Finland’s Pasi Uotila, 206-163, Sunday to win the Brunswick Ballmaster Open at Tali Bowl in Helsinki, Finland. The tournament was the first WTBA-PBA International Tour event of 2013, the opening event on the European Bowling Tour’s 2013 calendar, and a WTBA World Bowling Tour points event.

Recently-crowned Alka Seltzer Plus Cold Cheetah Champion Bill O’Neill of Langhorne, Pa., finished third, the highest finish for a PBA Tour member, losing to Uotila in the semifinal match, 237-233. Uotila defeated Sweden’s Peter Hellström in the opening match of the stepladder finals, 213-180.

Because Svensson, the 17-year-old European Youth champion, is not a PBA member, no PBA International title was awarded in the event.

American and international PBA Tour members will travel halfway around the world this week to compete in the International Bowling Championships supported by DHC Thursday through Saturday in Nagoya, Japan. Tommy Jones is the defending champion.

QUICK NOTES:

● It’s a boy for four-time PBA Tour titlist Bill O’Neill and wife Christi. The couple’s first child, Gavin David O’Neill, arrived on Tuesday, Jan. 15, weighing in at 6 pounds, 9 ounces.

● PBA champion Danny Wiseman has joined a group of well-known athletes in the Baltimore area as members of the Mayor’s Anti-Animal Abuse Task Force, aimed at eradicating animal abuse in the City of Baltimore. For more information, visit dannywisemanbowling.com.

Speaking of Wiseman, the 12-time PBA Tour titlist has withdrawn from the PBA Detroit Winter Swing due to a recurring wrist injury that has plagued him the past few years. Wiseman is hopeful he’ll be able to bowl the Tour’s major championship events later in the season.

● Please adjust your schedule: ESPN has revised the telecast time for the PBA League Round 2 and Carmen Salvino Classic title match on Sunday, Feb. 10, to 1 p.m. ET. The Feb. 10 coverage was originally scheduled for 3 p.m.
