Still Healing After Personal Loss, Ron Mohr Starts Anew on 2011 PBA Senior Tour

by Jason Thomas April 25, 2011 14:06

THE VILLAGES, Fla. – Still healing from the passing of his wife in January, Ron Mohr of Eagle River, Alaska, didn’t know what the future held for his professional bowling career—he just knew it was important to continue.

Mohr, whose wife Linda passed away as the result of treatment complications from surgery last September, moved into the second-round lead of the Professional Bowlers Association Senior Sun Bowl In The Villages Monday with a 3,698 16-game pinfall total (231.1 average). He had games of 203, 223, 234, 245, 224, 226, 214 and 246 in Monday’s eight-game round.

The 2009 PBA Senior Player of the Year had to miss the last three events of the 2010 Senior Tour season to return home to be with his wife and family.

“I think the best therapy for me was getting back out there and bowling again and I know she certainly would have wanted me to,” Mohr said. “I knew I was going to get back out there but didn’t know if I would be the same. I was doing well just practicing but you never know how you’ll do once you’re in competition.”

Mohr is indeed off to a good start having made it to the semifinal round in last week’s season-opening Senior Don Carter Open.

“I’m taking the same approach as I did when I first went out on tour in 2008,” Mohr said. I’ll see how competitive I am for the first few tournaments, but it looks like I’ll be bowling most of the rest of the season at this point.”

Mohr leads Sunday’s first-round leader Marc Lineberry of Camanche, Iowa, in second with 3,615, and Don Sylvia of Reno, Nev., in third with 3,609.

The 149-player field has been cut to the top 32 who will advance to match play Tuesday morning. Round of 8 and championship rounds will get underway Tuesday at 7 p.m.

PBA.com’s Xtra Frame video service will provide comprehensive final-day coverage of the Sun Bowl In The Villages on Tuesday.
