BRENTWOOD, Calif. – Hugh Miller of Seattle, bowled two 300 games and averaged 264.6 in Tuesday’s second round to take the lead in the PBA Senior Northern California Classic Tuesday at Harvest Park Bowl.
Miller, who spent more than 17 seasons competing on the national tour but still bowls in an occasional senior tour event, finished with a 3,961 16-game overall pinfall total which included 2,117 in Tuesday’s round on games of 238, 237, 300, 268, 279, 248, 300 and 247.
“I’ve had two 300s in a tournament but never two in the same block,” said Miller, who owns seven Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour titles and one Senior Tour title. “The biggest difference between yesterday and today was ball speed. I like to throw the ball hard but wasn’t getting the carry yesterday so I had to work hard on keeping my ball speed down in the second round.”
Miller, who surpassed the $1 million mark in PBA career earnings after finishing 16th in last week’s Senior U.S. Open, topped Hall of Famer and Senior U.S. Open runnerup Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., in second with 3,792 and Michael Henry of Brunswick, Ohio in third with 3,729. The top 32 from the 100-player field advanced to Wednesday’s match play rounds.
“I’m really not competing at the level you need to be at to play with these guys on a regular basis, said the 54-year-old Miller. “Originally I wasn’t going to bowl this tournament but I bowled well enough in the Senior U.S. Open and that encouraged me to bowl here.”
Senior U.S. Open winner Ron Mohr of Eagle River, Alaska, finished qualifying in sixth with 3,644, third-place finisher Harry Sullins of Chesterfield Township, Mich., ended the day in fifth with 3,651 and fourth-place finisher Hall of Famer Wayne Webb finished 10th with 3,593. Defending champion Don Sylvia of Reno, Nev., also advanced to match play ending the day in 21st with 3,495.
Round of 8 and championship rounds will get underway Wednesday at 5 p.m. PT. PBA.com’s Xtra Frame video service will provide final-day coverage of the Senior Northern California Classic.
