Scroggins Tops Home-State Favorite Kretzer to Win Eighth Title in Etonic Don Johnson Eliminator

by Bill Vint March 7, 2010 07:44

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Mike Scroggins of Amarillo, Texas, won his eighth career title and second of the 2009-10 season in the Professional Bowlers Association’s Etonic Don Johnson Eliminator finals at Sequoia Pro Bowl Sunday, surviving a 10th-frame error to edge home-state favorite Brian Kretzer of Dayton, Ohio, 206-195, in the championship match.

Scroggins, 45, put together three strikes in the middle of the final game to pull away from Kretzer, but when he left and missed a 7 pin in the 10th frame, he gave Kretzer a chance to strike out for a tie. Kretzer got a break when he kicked out the 6 pin for his first strike in the 10th, but then he left the 2-4-5-8 on his second shot to end his hopes for his first title.

“I didn’t miss a 7 pin all week,” Scroggins said later. “I just got the ball a little left. I knew I missed it as soon as I let it go, and then I sat down and starting thinking about a roll-off.

“After finishing second in the U.S. Open last week, I wasn’t expecting much,” the 45-year-old Scroggins said. “But I got lined up after the first seven games and went from nowhere to somewhere.”

With his second win of the year, Scroggins has become a candidate for PBA Player of the Year honors heading into the final three events of the season.

“I’m just trying to follow in Walter Ray Williams Jr.’s footsteps,” he grinned. “He’s been setting an example for us older guys.”

Williams, at age 50, also is a two-time winner this season. Bill O’Neill, Williams and Scroggins are one-two-three in the PBA Player of the Year point standings.

Scroggins and Kretzer eliminated Finland’s Osku Palermaa, who had the high score in the first round, to reach the title match. In the second game, Palermaa lost his pocket just long enough for Scroggins and Kretzer to sail past him. Scroggins had a string of seven strikes on his way to a 254 game, Kretzer almost matched him with a six-bagger for a 245 and Palermaa put together a late string of four strikes for a 211.

Reigning PBA Player of the Year Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, was the first player eliminated after bowling a 195 in the opening Eliminator game. Palermaa led the first round with a 233, Kretzer posted a 211 and Scroggins a 203 game.

During Sunday’s finals, Jimmy Johnson, son of the late PBA Hall of Famer after whom the tournament is named, and his wife Minda presented a check to Nationwide Children’s Hospital of Columbus and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation for $40,826. The 2010 contribution brings the total raised during the tournament for Nationwide Children’s Hospital to more than $100,000 over the past three years.

The Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour will take a week off during NCAA conference basketball playoffs week before returning to action in its own version of “March Madness,” the Go RVing Match Play Championship March 17-21 at Norwich Bowling and Entertainment Center in Norwich, Conn.

This year, for the first time, the PBA will offer fans a chance to play along with the Match Play Championship. An online “PBA Bracket Battle,” giving fans a chance to pick winners of all matches from start to finish, will be announced Wednesday on the PBA’s official website, pba.com.

Is there going to be a rebroadcast of this event?  ESPN, in its infinite wisdom, fed the satellite providers one scheduled start time, then changed it and never advised the providers.  We wait all week for these events and it just isn't right.  Without the fans, what do you have left?

It's March. College Hoops are on and The NBA is gearing up for playoffs. It's best to record the programs before and after bowling just make sure you don't miss a frame, and jThe Match was good though. I practiced on the ten pen all morning, and came home to watch the pros miss not once, not twice, but three times. I started pulling for Kretzer after Scroggins left the door open for him for the second time during the last match. Hope to see Kretzer get another shot oneday and congrats to Mike Scroggins.ust incase they go into a roll-off. The xtra frame stuff is for the birds. I can never see myslef paying for that and paying for cable. Give a giya break already.

You have to admire Mike Scroggins for his achievements. Like Joe Berardi and Dave Ferraro before him, Scroggins is certainly not over endowed with natural talent but has still managed to build a very successful PBA career through hard work and immense dedication.

I have been missed couple shows because of reschueduling and I know it is frustrated. Here are some tips that may help. Check the PBA web site for updated schedule. Enrol to their email list, so you will get notice of any changes by email.

Mike Scroggins definitely is one of great bowlers in the tour. However, I don't think he bowled well in the championship match. If he was facing Osku or Wes in the final, his missing 7 pin may have caused him a title.   He was lucky that Brian's performance was totally off track.

I have read most of the comments concerning the schedule change.  I understand the information is out there.  Some of us have very hectic lifes with our own activities and kids activites.  With that said, I too was oops'd by the channel guide not showing the programming change.  Our satelite guide is updated nightly at 3am.  You can't tell me that ESPN and or the PBA made this change on Sunday.  I watch ESPN very rarely, mostly for PBA or Bowling events.  Let's have a little compassion that there are people that may not have heard or had the time to check on-line.  They know that the PBA has been on at 2pm on Sunday and planned accordingly.  I know I did and was surprised.  Mistakes happen both ways and a little understanding can go a long way.

For Scroggins, my hat off, spanish anchors (International channel) always say he's a single throw bowler but I would love to be such a single throw player.

For telecast, ESPN Int has some of the same, I check the schedule on the web site for deferred broadcast (forget about watching a bowling event live) and sometimes it is not casted at all!

Great job Scroggy!!!  Another great win. Would LOVE to see more Osku Palermaa!! Hope he finds a way to be exempt next year. Saw him live on Thursday and it was unbelieveable!! Best comment of the day came from Rob, referring to finding this bowling center. It is in the middle of a neighborhood, and Rob said "I thought mapquest had decieved me!" I said the exact same thing when trying to find this place, but then out of nowhere, there was the bowling center!

I have a DVR and I programmed mine to tape all BOWLING on ESPN, even Classics.  My DVR did not record the early telecast as it has bowling scheduled at 2:30.  I am upset but I dont blame anyone.  I just hope they will re-broadcast tonight like they did in 2008 or was it 2009?

I did see Mike though receiving the award and talking about the missed 7 pins!  Way to go Mike, hope you get more titles!  I am not a fan but I do believe you are one of the best lefties that ever played the game.

Joel

3/7/2010 9:31:15 AM #

Congratulations, Mike Scroggins.  Yes, he missed those 7-pins, but he still found a way to get the job done.

I don't think you can blame the PBA for the time change on the telecast.  They probably weren't any happier about it than we are, but they did their best to let their fans know about it ahead of time.  As someone suggested, sign up for their e-mail alerts and check your e-mail and you'll be all right.

I'm a fan of the traditional stepladder format, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked yesterday's "eliminator" format as an exciting change of pace.  It also allowed or forced everyone to compete on the same conditions throughout the telecast instead of having some sit it out while the lanes changed unpredictably before they came on and bowled.

I thought about how it might be possible to combine an "eliminator" TV format with round-robin match play to determine who makes it to the telecast.  The idea I came up with is that you take the top four scorers in match play, give the top seed X number of pins of handicap, second seed Y number of pins, and so on to reward match play success; eliminate the lowest scoring bowlers from the first two games; and take high three game series for the two remaining bowlers instead of awarding the title to the highest final game score.

I lay it out in my bowling blog entry today.  What do you think?  I know it's not a perfect idea.  Maybe you can tweak it or come up with something better that draws more regular fans to the PBA telecasts but is also fair to the bowlers and rewards them for doing their best at all times instead of coasting through matches because they've either got a big lead or they're too far down to win, and it awards the title to who bowled best for the ENTIRE TELECAST and not just for the last game.

He also managed a 250+ while never missing the hole. On the other hand big crankers like Jones and Mallott could hardly hit the pocket at all.

I don't understand when earl anthony made match play and he was the only lefty, he got praised. When Mike makes the finals and then makes the TV Show, he's lucky? Wake up bowlers! He's the best lefty on tour the past 5 years and the record is about to show it. Great win Mike!!!

Tony T as he was attempting to trash Scroggie mentioned that he only won 50% of his games on television. Doesn't he realize that most have lost more than they won? Wise up Tony.
I'd rather watch a pro hit the pocket on a regular basis than watch these 500 revolution guys constantly either flag the headpin, leave 2-8-10's and miss easy spares.

I think it would be a good idea for ESPN to re-play last weeks show this coming week since they do not have a bowling show live to produce.

I t might be a good idea for the PBA to be able to play the shows on its web site at a later date.  I realize that sponsors pay to have their ads
on live TV but if the PBA had a prior agreement, this would hav e already been taken care of.

Thanks

Bowled with you in the Pro-Am in New Jersey 2009, such a nice gentlemen. Looks like you're getting better with age. Congrats on last week's win, hope there are many more titles for you. Win the player of the year, you deserve it.
