Amateur Brian Ziesig Defeats Jason Belmonte to Win PBA GEICO Mark Roth Plastic Ball Championship

by Jerry Schneider March 28, 2010 10:00

Brian Ziesig of Levittown, N.Y., won the Professional Bowlers Association GEICO Mark Roth Plastic Ball Championship Sunday at AMF Babylon Lanes to become the first amateur to win a Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour event since 2002.

Ziesig rolled three strikes in the 10th frame in the championship match to tie Australian two-hander Jason Belmonte 247-247 in regulation which forced a one-ball, sudden-death roll-off that was won by Ziesig with a strike to Belmonte’s nine-count in which he left the 7 pin.

“Whenever I tried to over-hook the ball, it seemed I wouldn’t get the carry so those last few shots I paid special attention to avoiding that,” Ziesig said. “Believe it or not I really wasn’t that nervous so that helped me throw those shots the way I wanted to.”

Ziesig became the first amateur to win a Tour title since Brett Wolfe won the 2002 United States Bowling Congress Masters.

“This is my 15 minutes of fame” said the 35-year-old Ziesig, who works for a local bowling supply company. “It’s back to work tomorrow morning. To be able to accomplish this on national TV in front of a hometown crowd is really kind of a fantasy.”

Ziesig, who earned $25,000 for the win, had been a Touring professional in the 1998, ’99 and 2000 seasons with a previous best finish of 10th. He earned his way into the tournament field through a tour qualifying round earlier in the week.

The 26-year-old Belmonte, who earned $13,000 for second, was hoping to win his second career title having won The Bowling Foundation Long Island Classic here last year to become the first bowler to win a PBA Tour title using a two-handed delivery.

“The best you can hope for is to throw 10 good shots but I threw nine—what can you do?” said Belmonte, who finished second for the third time this season. “I left that 10 pin in the eighth frame because I got behind the ball too much and I just didn’t get the break.”

In the opening stepladder match, Wayne Garber of Modesto, Calif., defeated two-time Tour titlist Michael Michael Machuga of Erie, Pa., 258-245. Machuga earned $5,000 for fifth.

In the second match, the Tour’s all-time career win leader with 47 titles, Walter Ray Williams Jr., defeated Garber 280-211. In the semi-final match Ziesig defeated Williams 255-237 to advance to the championship match.

William’s third place finish was enough to put him in tie for the Player of the Year race with Bill O’Neill going into the final event of the season in Baltimore next week. Williams earned $8,000 for third and Garber $6,000 for fourth.

The Plastic Ball Championship required all players to use identical plastic bowling balls and is the one event on the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour that turns back the clock on ball technology creating an equalized playing field and eliminating the reliance on today’s high-powered equipment.

Congratulations Brian...  Saw you on ESPN at BW3.  It wasn't easy getting the sound turned off the NCAA tournament to hear what was going on.

That's the question I want to ask too. How does PBA decide the POY when the players are in tie?

Congrats! Brian. It was an exciting game.

Congratulations to Brian Ziesig for a marvelous performance his first time ever on national TV.  He handled the pressure as though he'd been on a hundred times.  When I caught glimpses on Xtra Frame of him bowling earlier in the week and didn't know who he was, I wondered how he had even made it into match play with that peculiar style of his.  But I don't wonder anymore, nor do I dispute the contention that he's one of the best bowlers in New York.

However, my figurative hat goes off to all the other competitors today as well.  Michael, Wayne, Walter Ray, and Belmo, you all bowled great.  But it was Brian's day, and he deserved what he got.  what a wonderful capper to a fantastic week for the PBA.  I just hope that Mark Roth doesn't suffer a big letdown now that his tournament is over.  I hope that he can keep rehabilitating himself and end up back out on the lanes someday.

And look out everybody.  I understand that Walter Ray threw a few warm-up balls today two-handed, just in case.  Now that he and Walter are apparently friends and Belmo's hitching a ride on the WRWJ RV Express to Baltimore, he might give Walter enough coaching to make him a double threat on tour next week and for years to come. Smile

Congratulations Brian on your big win. Uncle Bob Kaufmann told us this afternoon about your win and there will be a big party tonight. Too bad we live in Georgia and won't be able to attend.

Love to all the family,

Great match... congrats to both Brian and Jason for a great showing.

"What happens if neither Bill O'Neill, Walter Ray and Mike Scroggins make the show next week... who wins the POY??"  is a very good question and adds more questions for me.  How are POY points awarded?  Do they only use championship round appearances for POY points?  I see that O'Neill had one more than Walter until today; now they each have 5.  But what about overall season play?  Checking the rest of the stats for the year, Walter has made 13 match play rounds and leads all others while Bill has 8, tied with 5 others for 13th.  Walter leads in averages, Bill is 10th.  Sounds to me like Walter should be way ahead instead of tied for POY.  Perhaps the POY point system should be tweaked a bit for next year.  No disrespect to Bill but I feel like Walter has bowled much better and should be leading.  Shouldn't POY honors go to the player that has performed best throughout the year?

POY tiebreaker should be the highest in the current season overall points standings

Although Brian is technically considered an "amateur", I met him in the JBT days and he always carried himself as a "professional."  And he did so again today.  It was great to see him win against the greatest (WRW) and arguably the most exciting (Belmo) bowlers today.  Awesome match, awesome result.

Great tournament, great bowlers, and a great finish. The only bad part was, as usual, poor commentary. I have had enough with the "ham bone" and other amateurish blabber. You have one guy that knows nothing about bowling and another that thinks he knows everything. Try a little professionalism!

here is another question i have besides the player of the year scenario, does brian now have a chance to bowl the tournament of champions with this win?  also, i think the pba should grant him a commissioner's exemption for next week.  just a thought.

rob

3/27/2010 11:28:03 PM #

Another excellent, dramatic finish for a PBA tournament. I think this has been one of the most interesting seasons to watch the PBA in a while. Ijust hope the fact that an amateur won doesn't bring out the 'Bowling isn't a real sport' faction.

J Anderson

3/27/2010 11:50:50 PM #

I am very tired of the hambone also! What I especially liked about today's coverage was the bowlers from the past who still are into the game. Johnny Petraglia is a marvelous commentator, and it was great to see Mark Roth hoping to be able to bowl again. Another player who is always there that is a legend is Carmen Salvino. Does he avoid the commentator position?  I hope Walter Ray has better luck next week-he can bowl no matter what!

Marty

3/27/2010 11:55:53 PM #

Brian earned an exemption for next year the same as any other title just like Voss did when he won the mixed doubles and he will be bowling in next year's TOC I am sure. The choice is his as to what he wants to bowl next year.

Fairly sure that Brian does NOT get the exemption next season, as he was an amateur and the rules state amateurs are not eligible for the exemptions.

NO, the amateur does NOT earn the exemption.  Well, he may have EARNED it, but he does not GET it.

YES, the show, as Rob put it when they went to "bonus bowling", BLEW past its allotted time slot, and by about 22 minutes by my count when the final ball was thrown.

I agree that having a guy like Johnny Petraglia in the "booth" enhanced the telecast a great deal.  I too wonder why Salvino, who appears to attend almost every tournament, doesn't sit in too sometime.  Is it because he doesn't want to, or because no one has asked him?  The stories he could tell and the insights he could offer!  Does the PBA think he's too old for their primary audience?

Actually, Walter Ray didn't just throw it two handed in practice.  His last shot of the show, he rolled it two handed.  No one at home saw it because the camera was on Ziesig so home viewers totally missed it, but I was there and saw it.  He knocked down nine pins with it, I think, which just goes to show his versatility.  I tried throwing my ball two-handed during practice once and chucked it into the adjoining lane.

All the matches yesterday were very good. But, the final one, was special.
There may be some great bowlers in other parts of the world, but we have the best. Considering the bowlers were "only" rolling plastic, the scores were very impressive all week. In the finals, I had mixed emotions. I tend to root for the underdog. But, watching Belmonte, for me, is a treat.
I am almost 60 years old. But, I am not of the mindset, that he does not roll the ball, in the traditional fashion. He can roll it with his ear lobe, for all I care. Both he and Ziesig showed great moxie in striking out in the 10th. But, to have the final game decided by a 1 ball roll off, is ridiculous. For years, they would bowl the 9th & 10th frames. I would like to know how many times opponents tied and had to repeat the 9th & 10th, again. I cannot remember that happening. And I have watched the PBA, since it's inception. This was an exciting, live event. What would we have cut in to ? Some pre-recorded poker tournament. How can anyone take the PBA seriously ? A $ 25,000 first prize. It reminds me of the 1980's. I guess that I have rambled too long

I recorded the show because I couldn't watch it live.  I missed the entire last match because it went long.  The PBA needs to secure a longer time slot with ESPN.  An hour and a half just isn't long enough.

From the PBA guidebook, to answer the question about a POY points tie, see point "b" below:

10.3.1  Chris Schenkel PBA Player of the Year Award. The Chris Schenkel PBA Player of the Year Award will be determined annually using the following point system in which bowlers will be awarded points based on their finish in all PBA Tour events.
a. Points will be awarded to the top five (5) finishers in each step ladder event and the top four (4) finishers in each single elimination event.
b. The PBA World Ranking Point List shall be used to break a tie.

HATE TO BEAT A DEAD HORSE..

  BUT -

ROB STONE <- ENOUGH ALREADY WITH THE HAMBONE AND YAHTZEE EXCLAMATIONS. IT WAS FINE WHEN YOU WERE A NEWBIE AND KINDA CUTE AT FIRST - BUT WHAT YOUR DOING IS SOO DISRESPECTFUL TO BOWLING AND ITS HISTORY.

ISN'T IT ABOUT TIME YOU LEARNED THE PHRASE "4 BAGGER"

Kevin

3/29/2010 4:26:17 AM #

I've done my share of criticizing Rob Stone, and I think there's plenty to criticize him for, including his talking to the players through their earphones just before they step up to deliver a crucial shot.  But I think he catches too much flak for his "hambone." At this point, I think he's stuck between a proverbial rock and a hard place.  If he says it, some people will criticize him.  If he doesn't say it, some will miss it.  I think he's toned it down anyway and says it almost sheepishly as a joke on himself, and when he doesn't say it, Randy goads him into saying it.  I'd be the first to say that I'd love to see the bowling announcer par excellence Denny Schreiner in Stone's position.  But he probably wouldn't appeal that much to the primary demograpic the PBA is trying to reach, and one thing that Stone does have going for him is that he brings a lot of enthusiasm to his job and the game.  I also think that he and Randy have forged a nice rapport.

Steve

3/29/2010 4:44:12 AM #

Dan, Thanks for your explaination. I think PBA should consider other factors, such as match play appearances, point and average rather than just reply on the points awarded to the top finishers.

Regarding the average, Walter Ray's average is about 2.72 pins more than the 2nd highest average (Chris Barnes); and 2.72 is almost equal to the difference between the 2nd highest average (Chris) and the 13th highest average (Patrick Allen)which is 2.76. It can tell how outstanding Walter Ray is this year.

I don't ever want to hear Randy Peterson say he had "The worst break in bowling". I still can't believe Belmonte left that 7 pin. Congrats to Brian. Now if I can carry the 2/8 like that... for me that would of been a 6 count and a open.

I'm with Bill Tasso on this one, great comment throughout but what really hits the mark is his bottom line regarding the PBA and the touring pros bottom line!  He is 100% accurate when he says how can anyone take the sport seriously with a $25,000 payout.  With paydays like this to win and only $3000 for a fifth place TV finish, how do the majority of these guys manage to stay out there on the tour considering the rising cost of traveling coupled with the entry fees every tournament?  I love the PBA and my wife and I have been watching it religously since the early '80's. Unfortunately the picture I get in my mind and I'm sure many others get (long timers or not) just doesn't equate to professionals competing in a major competition when you hear a prize of $25,000 in this day and age.  These guys are put through some grueling qualifying and if they are the professional athletes I feel they are, they should be paid accordingly.  Not talking millions but the current prize could be doubled or more.  I would hate to see it all just fade away if the PBA can't manage to pay these guys enough to keep them out there on tour.  A little more promoting through ESPN and maybe stop competing directly against the NFL and NASCAR just may be something to consider too.

Scott

Fine Steve..
then i'm going to my local sports bar and when i see a double hit during a Giant's game..I'll yell out "2 bagger!"

[ think I'll call a home run a "once around the park" ]

i'm sure the crowd wouldn't mind

Watching Brian win today goes to show how many great bowlers are out there that are not on the tour. The PBA needs to realize this and allow for more bowlers to be exempt on the National Tour.

As far as the commentators Randy and Rob, Randy knows what hes talkin about, Rob doesnt. I give Rob credit though. ESPN threw him into a sport he was not familar with, and he will learn as time goes on. Blame ESPN for that blunder, not ROB.

Jeff

3/29/2010 10:31:03 AM #

And I also wanted to add a comment about people saying "How can we take bowling seriously in todays day and age, with a 25k first prize"

I agree 100%. These are the best athletes in thier respective sport in the WORLD....Its time the PBA figures out a way to pay them like it. Im an aspring PBA touring player, and im sorry to say if improvements arent made with the prize funds the next few years, im afraid I might have to give up on that dream. With the cost of everything going up, and the money in bowling going down, it just wont be worth chasing that dream any longer...And thats Sad

Jeff

3/29/2010 12:22:53 PM #

Congrats to Brian on a great performance!! Unfortunately I missed the ending thanks to the four letter network. DVR'd the show, even extended the time 15 minutes just in case. Of course the show went 20 minutes long, and was cut off during the 8th frame. Found 15 minutes of fluff that could have been cut out in order to get the show to run on time, and that is not including the great interview with Mark Roth (something they should do more of). I had to go to PBA.com to find out match ended in a tie!!

I also have to say to the PBA, it is a shame that a great bowler like Brian Z. feels that he has a better chance providing for his family selling bowling products instead of being on tour. Everyone talked about all week that he is a great bowler, and apparently has the ability to perform at a high level. I was watching a YouTube video of some past championships last week from seven or eight years ago, and the pros were competing for a 100k prize. Now, the best paycheck on tour was 60k at a major. It is truly embarrassing that the PBA can't do a better job getting advertising money for these events!! FIRE your current sales team, and start fresh!!

the pba needs sponsorships, sponsorships and more sponsorships.  maybe since nike dropped tiger woods they can pick up someone like bill o'neill or wrwII and get into the bowling business.  the only other way to generate prize money is to make more arena finals and actually sell them out.  why dont we see more of the bowling distributors advertising on tour?  where is amf, delora, lane 1, dexter, linds, qubica, and the other suppliers get into the action.  why doesnt phantom radio and bowltech.com get involved?  what about usbc helping out a little more, kegel and the BPAA?  hell, what about the beer companies?  i know pba members can't drink during the competition but if i remember right, miller high life and jason couch had an agreement at one time.  just my rants and raves for the day.  maybe i agree with firing the sales rep and putting someone in there that is a little more knowledgeable with the industry of bowling.

rob

3/29/2010 11:00:39 PM #

Good point Rob!  I think if those bowling product manufacturers will give more support then the PBA will grow bigger and prizes will go up!  Nike should get involved and Adidas as well.  I remember Adidas was manufacturing bowling shoes at one point, why can't Nike do it as well?  Just like their battle cry "Just do it!"

Joel

3/30/2010 1:16:26 AM #

In order to take the pro bowlers seriously, the disparity between local league lane conditions (where in some cases all you need to do is keep the ball out of the gutter and you have a 200) and PBA conditions (where you achieve high scores above 200 the old fashioned way, you earn them) needs to be eliminated.  While some bowlers who are used to averaging 200's see their averages drop to the say 150's there would be more of an appreciation for what the pros have to do to achieve high scores.

Keith

3/30/2010 6:45:33 AM #

Keith, I think you might be right that the people watching might have more respect for the pros if they knew how challenging the lane conditions are on which the pros compete.  However, I'm afraid that if houses started putting out these conditions for everyone, they'd lose too much of their business to stay in business.  Bowlers are spoiled by figurative "bumper bowling" conditions and want to keep them.  It's a darn shame, but that seems to be the way of things.
