by Jason Thomas February 16, 2010 07:41

Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga, N.Y. and Amy Stolz of Castle Rock, Colo., were the Tour Qualifying Round leaders among 14 players earning berths in the Bayer Don and Paula Carter Mixed Doubles Tuesday at Brunswick Zone Wheat Ridge.

Ciminelli bowled a 1,599 seven-game pinfall (228.4 average) to top a field of 57 non-exempt players in the Lumber Liquidators PBA pre-tournament qualifying event which awarded 12 male and two female berths in the mixed doubles tournament.

Ciminelli has had a solid year in PBA Tour competition thus far, finishing third in last week’s United States Bowling Congress Masters in addition to posting runner-up finishes in the PBA Cheetah and Viper Championships earlier in the season.

Other bowlers advancing to Wednesday’s Round of 64 were: Kris Koeltzow, Wheat Ridge, Colo., 1,590; Tyler Jensen, Keller, Texas, 1,589; Andrew Cain, Phoenix, Ariz., 1,568; Steven Badovinac, Parker, Colo., 1,555; Jonathan Van Hees, Charlestown, R.I., 1,546; Lawrence Marquez, Lakewood, Colo., 1,545; Jesse Buss, Wichita, Kan., 1,539; Tom Daugherty, Wesley Chapel, Fla., 1,537; Andres Gomez, Colombia, 1,532; Steven Black, Phoenix, Ariz., 1,532 and Tom Hess, Urbandale, Iowa, 1,522.

In the PBA Women’s Series presented by BOWL.COM qualifying event, Stolz, a former member of Team USA and runner-up in the 2008 USBC Queens, had a 1,430 pinfall total (204.2 average) to lead a field of 11 bowlers competing. The other player advancing was Brenda Edwards of Mansfield, Texas, who finished second 65 pins behind Stolz.

The Bayer Don and Paula Carter Mixed Doubles format requires PBA Tour male players and PBA Women’s Series players to bowl separate 14-game qualifying rounds – seven games each on Wednesday and Thursday. Based on their qualifying ranking after 14 games, the top 16 men and top 16 women will be paired based upon their respective standings to compete in match play on Friday. After 16 head-to-head doubles matches, the top five teams will advance to Sunday’s stepladder finals. The finals format will use the Baker Format where each player will bowl five alternate frames to combine for one score.

The Mixed Doubles finals will be televised live by ESPN at 1 p.m. Eastern (11 a.m. Mountain) on Sunday.
