Mike Fagan Maintains Lead in PBA One A Day Dick Weber Open

by Jason Thomas January 28, 2010 12:05

Mike Fagan of Patchogue, N.Y., leads the field of 24 who have advanced to round-robin match play for the PBA One A Day Dick Weber Open at Fountain Bowl.

Fagan, who led after yesterday’s second round, expanded his lead after Thursday’s third and final five-game qualifying round posting a 3,538 15-game overall pinfall (235 average). He holds a 97-pin lead over Eugene McCune of Munster, Ind., in second with a 3,441 pinfall (229 average).

In the final round Fagan, who finished second in last year’s Dick Weber Open, had games of 169, 250, 214, 290 and 260.

“The lanes were very touchy today and the ball I had been using from yesterday wasn’t working,” said the 29-year-old Fagan. “I made the adjustments I needed to make and started to get the ball reaction I was looking for.

“I feel great but the important thing now is not to get ahead of myself.”

Fagan’s has one Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour win which came in the 2007-08 season in the PBA Exempt Doubles Classic with Danny Wiseman.

Among other notables making the top 24 were: Hall of Famer and PBA’s all-time win leader (46 titles) Walter Ray Williams Jr. in fourth; Hall of Famer and 19-time titlist Amleto Monacelli in fifth; 2005-06 PBA Player of the Year Tommy Jones in sixth; PBA Hall of Famer and third-place finisher in last year’s event, Pete Weber in ninth, and Hall of Famer and defending champion Norm Duke in a tie for 13th.

The Dick Weber Open features the traditional open qualifying format used in the PBA’s early years with 15 games of qualifying determining the top 24 advancing to three eight-game blocks of round-robin match play. The top five players after match play advance to the stepladder finals.

The first match play round begins later this evening with two more rounds to be conducted on Friday. The stepladder finals will be televised by ESPN2 at 1 p.m. Eastern (10 a.m. Pacific).
