Kelly Kulick Makes Sports History as First Woman to Win a PBA Tour Title by Capturing 45th PBA Tournament of Champions

by Jerry Schneider January 24, 2010 08:36

Sports history was made Sunday when Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., won the 45th Professional Bowlers Association Tournament of Champions at Red Rock Lanes becoming the first woman to win a Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour tournament.

She defeated 2007-08 PBA Player of the Year Chris Barnes 265-195 in the championship match to win a $40,000 first prize in PBA’s signature event, plus a two-year exemption on the PBA Tour.

“It’s been a dream of mine to win a PBA Tour event but I couldn’t have imagined it would have come in the Tournament of Champions,” said the 32-year-old right-hander. “It may have looked easy but my legs were like jelly—it got to a point where I couldn’t feel them. Believe me I was nervous and I was just letting adrenaline take over.”

The previous high finish for a woman in a PBA Tour event was second by Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., in the 2005 Banquet Open.

In 2006, Kulick became the first woman to earn an exemption on the PBA Tour by finishing sixth in the PBA Tour Trials. Her best finish in the 2006-07 season was 22nd which she accomplished twice.

Kulick recognized the potential impact her victory will have for the future of the sport.

“I believe this can only mean bigger and better things for the sport,” she said. “If in any way this can be a boost for women sports and bowling, I’m willing to do my part.

“I feel like I’m on a magic carpet ride right now and I want to keep riding it higher and higher.”

In the championship match Kulick started with four consecutive strikes, then had an open frame when she left the 7-10 split in the fifth frame. She then went on to fire the next six strikes and a nine-count on the final ball to close the game.

Barnes, who won the Tournament of Champions in 2006, was trying for his second Tournament of Champions win.

“When it comes down to one game, a combination of factors have to come together and they just didn’t for me,” Barnes said, “but Kelly bowled great and she met every challenge.”

In women’s professional competition, Kulick won the 2007 United States Bowling Congress Queens and the 2003 U.S. Women’s Open in addition to winning the PBA Women’s World Championship in 2009.

In the semifinal match, Kulick defeated eight-time Tour champion Mika Koivuniemi 227-223 to advance to the final match against Barnes.

In the opening match, Koivuniemi defeated three-time titlist Rhino Page, 255-215.

Kulick earned a berth in the Tournament of Champions, by winning the PBA Women’s World Championship last September, the first PBA women’s major tournament.

I was there & witnessed all of Kelly's 50 games from her 1st one that was 152 to her clutch 48th at 267. Everyone routed for her all week. It was amazing to be there. I'm glad I live in Las Vegas.

if i were an exempt player on tour (i.e., man) i would demand the women bowl against the men every week and the prize fund that the USBC takes from local bowlers to fund the nonsense that is the womens tour be put into the men's tour and increase their prize fund. they proved they can beat the men now at least put my money (my usbc dues) into something i watch... the mens tour...not the womens.

This is a great "feel good" story, but it also once and for all settles the question of whether bowling is a "sport" or not. When a woman can win at the highest level against men, you've got a fantastic "game" with great "competition" - but certainly not a sport. Case closed finally. Congrats Kelly on a fantastic achievement.

I have known Kelly since birth and she has always been a fierce competitor in whatever she does. I am so happy, not only for her but the fact that she will always be the first woman to ever win a PBA tour title and the first to ever win a major tournament. I am so very very proud of Kelly. You've come a long way kid.

Awesome Miss Double K Kelly Kulick!! Showing no fear against the bigs is what makes Kulick a true great competitor! Hitting up against the Big Finn (hehe got to love the retro pants and also a little flashback when Barnes beat Mika back at the Buckeye classic 2009 the loser had to wear the pants haha gotta love the big finn for being a good sport and at least he made the show along with barnes) and the technician Barnes was true will and determination! Great job Kelly and PBA take notice the Women's Series is just heating up!

I watched this tournament all week long on XTRA Frame, and it is by far one of the greatest in history! Going into position round was one of the closest cuts I've ever seen, and Kelly dominated all the way through!

Congrats Kelly, you earned it!

The prize money was down because the country is in a recession.  A lot of the prize funds are supposed to be reduced on the PGA tour as well and some events have been eliminated, how much she won is not is important,  the fact she won is what is.  Congrats Kelly great job.

Congrats Kelly.  Didn't get to watch it live, but had it recorded and will keep it for a long time to watch again.  Just as Barnes said, it doesn't matter if you are male or female when you reach the finals of a bowling major, you belong.  And Kelly showed she belongs.  To B. Welch and Jim O'Conner, obviously you don't know the difference in a game and a sport.  I can only assume your games are Clue and Monopoly.

It is sad to see the commentary that bowling is now not a sport, but a game because a woman beat many men at it.  In reality bowling is both a game and a sport.  The question I have is will someone finally claim that NASCAR / Indy Car racing is only a game since Danica Patrick has beaten the men on occasion.  (at least once that I am aware of)

Bowling is a game if you walk into the lanes, plunk down some $10 and bowl a few lines, no questions there.  But if you bowl some 40 to 60 games in a week, it becomes more than a few rounds of poker.  It becomes seriously hard work, and yes, an athletic endeavor.  I would like to see B. Welch or Jim O'Connor bowl that many games in four days at whatever is their consistent level.  Few who post here could get through that kind of gauntlet.

Understand that I have met Kelly, spent 4 days in a clinic last year as one of the students, and I know that she takes physical conditioning very seriously because she knows that it is not just a matter of throwing a ball down the lanes.  At the pro level, you have to be able to perform even when you are dog tired and your body is screaming "No Mas!!".

Congratulations Kelly!!  I bet all the staff at Dick Ritger Bowling are just proud as peacocks at the achievement of one of their star students!

First of all, I would like to congratulate Kelly for an outstanding performance today and I wish her continued success.  However, I don't agree with her being in the Tournament of Champions field unless she wins a PBA event that is open to both men and women.  I would have no problem with her victory in the 2009 Womens Championship providing her entry into the Masters or some other PBA events and I would enjoy watching her compete.  She certainly earned her way on Tour in 06-07.  I'm sorry but I just feel that the T of C should be only open to men or women that win regular PBA events.

congrats to Kelly for her accomplishment first of all.  Unfortunately it is viewed as tainted a bit.  Due to the fact that she had a spot on the tournament of champions and did not win a PBA Tour event.  This use to be a requirement to earn a spot into this event.  I do not wish to take away her accomplishment in any way shape or form.  I do wish to see that due to the fact that the womens tour has been obsolete for the last couple of years that the women have the same qualifications as the men in order to compete on tour.  The men do not have any advantages over the women because it requires consistancy and accuracy to perform in this sport.  Kelly recieved a two year exemption on the PBA Tour for winning this event in which stated earlier in past years she would not have qualified for.  Once again to Kelly congratulations to your accomplishments.  The PBA tour and USBC need to evaluate their positions on Men and Women both.
It has also been controversial to the fact that since the merger of ABC, YABA, and the WBC that women may bowl in the mens events but the men may not bowl in womens only events.  I wish to see that they get rid of this and if they are going to truely merge that they make all events in USBC into one.  This includes Masters on the State and National level.

Congratulations Kelly! You weren't the best female bowler this week. You were the best bowler PERIOD! You beat arguably the best bowler on the planet on the biggest stage, and for that, I sincerely congratulate you. But, in my opinion, you shouldn't have been given the opportunity to compete in this event. The Tournament of Champions is rich in tradition and may be the toughest tournament to win since you had to be a past champion. I disagree with the "new" PBA's format allowing special exemptions to Senior, Women's Series and Regional winners. I understand our sport needs exposure. I understand we need marketing ploys to attract new viewers. But we cannot forget the PBA's roots in the process. The T of C is one of those roots. Please do not misinterpret my reason for writing this. My issue is NOT gender related. My issue is with the PBA's decision to alter one of the most coveted tournaments we have.

This touched me so very much on so many levels. I congradulate Kelly on a well deserved and much worked for Win. I so hope this helps our sport for both Men And Women. It is a Great sport that deserves so much more from the media and all. The gentleman that stated this was not a sport now because she won is a FOOL. She was  more conditioned physically and mentally this week, and that is what it is about. Try bowling 48 games under those conditions. Kelly you touched my life today  with your efforts and results. I appreciate what you did for our sport today. Please everyone support the bowlers not the sex. All our kids need to know they can dream and succeed. Maybe Kelly's totally satisfying feel good victory will FINALLY open eyes that the women are just as deserving of having their own pro tour again as the men. I find it hard to believe there isn't someone out there in corporate America interested in putting their name on the resurrection of the LPBT. There's a whole new generation of talented womens bowlers who have appeared since the plug was pulled on the womens tour. They deserve the right to compete on a regular basis now that they have shown they are just as talented as their male counterparts. Way to go Kelly. Hopefully your win will be a catalyst to the return of the womens pro tour.

So Kelly won and some of you bozos are gonna whine--" she shouldn't have been allowed in". Well she was, and rightfully too. So, get over it.
She played a consistant line and hand position and we ALL could learn from her performance. I watch the ladies golf for the same reason-- they use smoothness and timing instead of raw power-- I liked Kelly's technique, and I'll try to be as smooth as her next league night.

Thanks for showing everyone how to do it, Kelly, and congratulations.

Kelly deserved her win today. She bowled the best and that's that.

As a male, I want access to all women events from now on. I think Kelly has proven that accuracy, stamina, and control are the factors that make a competitive bowler, not extraordinary physical capability.

This "sport" needs to merge the tours to one with men and women together. This is the only way to make everything fair. Everyone gets to try out for the one single tour and those qualifying bowlers get to compete for the big money (if you call $40k big money considering the time and effort required to get there). I'm all for equal opportunity as long as it actually is equal. Right now it's not.

Again, congrats Kelly you kicked butt and deserved to win.

bowler

1/23/2010 3:35:16 PM #

Kelly, You earned every bit of the title as you were the best on the lanes today. 11 straight in the pocket in that pressure cooker merely confirms that bowling is more about skill than about power. I had the pleasure of being on the lanes a couple of times when Earl Anthony bowled and his style of precision and patience is still something to strive for.

As to bowling being a sport, I am sure that the naysayers above believe "sport" should be reserved for those activities suited for people like themselves, ie Strong like Bull, Smart like Ox.

Again congratultions.

For Chris and "Earl",
It doesn't matter one bit what the qualifications to enter the T of C were. They are set up only to limit the number of bowlers to have a reasonable tournament. The fact is, Kelly bowled over 50, as in "FIFTY" games to even qualify for the finals. Any negative comments will just expose your ignorance.

A VERY BIG CONGRATS to you Kelly!!! I wish I could have watched it live but stuck at work without a TV Frown . But based on the full story it sounds like a hard fought VICTORY!! After reading some of the reply's on here it is obvious that there are some people that are still stuck on the circumstances surrounding the qualifications for being able to bowl in the TOC. Kelly is a past CHAMPION several times over in the women's professional tour before there was an opportunity to join the pba tour. In my opinion, (and obviously pba does share the same opinion) her past wins certainly does qualify her to enter into the TOC.
That being said, I say to every nay sayer and person who feels as though she shouldn't belong in the TOC or PBA tour for whatever reason, where are you to prove otherwise? A true bowler would say nothing and let their game speak for them. Throughout this tournament, her game did just that. As a previous commenter phrased it, this week, Kelly you were the best bowler, PERIOD! This is a huge accomplishment that entitles you PBA CHAMPION of CHAMPIONS! and that is something that only 34 other bowlers in history could say. That is ELITE, no matter who you are!
Great Job Kelly!!!

Has anyone noticed that Kelly's original mentor, Dick Ritger, was on the losing end of his one TOC finals appearance in Don Johnson's famous 299 game for the 1970 championship?  Or that the score she shot was within 3 pins of Ritger's 268?

To those who regard the PBA TOC as tainted, might I point out that the PGA Masters tournament in Augusta is meant to be for those who have won tournaments, and thus are "masters"?  Yet they also include a fair number of honorary invitations to amateurs of note, like the current US Amateur Champion and several others.  If an amateur won the Masters, would you regard that win as tainted?  Probably they would, but to then argue the person should never have been there in the first place comes across as no more or no less than a case of sour grapes.

In the same respect, Kelly was invited as a way of honoring an achievement that was significant to bowling, though everyone figured she was headed for an early exit.  That some guys are embarassed that a "gimmie" actually won should be no reason to try to marginalize the result.  I just do not buy the argument that she should never have been in the TOC in the first place.

First off, congrats to Kelly. She was able to enter, and everyone plays to win the game. But let's put this into perspective. The fact of the matter is, bowling loses whatever credibility it had when women can compete and win in a field of men. It's obvious the balls are what allow her to carry and score with the best of them. Don't get me wrong, she has almost ALL of the qualities to be a successful bowler, but the one thing that should hinder her from performing above the men is physical strength and the ability to combine power, speed, and rotation required to knock all the pins down. That is not needed these days. Matter of fact, less is greater. Her low rev rate and slow ball speed was a perfect combo to knock down the wood. The show was a prime example of that. Women and liberal folks hate me when I say things like this. But it's the truth and the truth...well...it hurts.

Bowling took a bad beat

What a great accomplishment.  I first got to see Kelly in action back in 1999 when I was the Tour Media Director for the PWBA.  It was doubles event and she was teamed up with Marianne DiRupo.  As a longtime bowler, former PBA member and being around the tremendous talent on the ladies tour day in and day out, it can be easy to become "immune" to the talent levels.  But Kelly was one of those rare talents that stops you in your tracks when you're walking down the bowling center concourse.

You know what I mean... one of those "Who is THAT?" moments.

Her game and her attitude were both that impressive and I clearly remember thinking "wow, this lady has a heck of a game".  As I recall, her and Mar made the show, went to the title match and finished second.

From one former "Joisey" person to another, way to go Kelly.

First of all CONGRATULATIONS KELLY!!!!!!!!!!!  Second of all to say she should not have been there or that the BALL is the ONLY reason she was able to compete against the men is crazy!!!!!  Does a man have a slight advantage because they can "POWER" the ball more than a woman...sure I'll give you that.  But SERIOUSLY?????  To say that it is only the ball and not the bowler is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!!!!  Women can compete against men...we just bowl differently.  Then to say that bowling is NOT a SPORT is criminal!!!!  How can someone say that bowling that many games in a short amount of time is not a sport...last time I checked they call NASCAR a freaking sport!!!!!!!!!  Can anyone say LEFT TURN.  It just goes to show how when a FEMALE wins something against a man it becomes well she got lucky or she should not have been here!!!!

BULL POOP..........SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE AND WOMEN SHOULD BOWL AGAINST THE MEN OR HAVE THEIR OWN TOUR!!!!!!!!  AWESOME JOB KELLY AND DONT LET ALL THE CRAP PEOPLE POST DIM THE BRIGHT LIGHT ON YOUR AMAZING ACCOMPLISHMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To Steve Jenks and paul J:
Maybe you should actually read my comment from beginning to end more carefully. I am not taking anything away from Ms. Kulick. Kelly earned her win. Plain and simple. She was the best bowler of the week. My problem is the PBA changing the format of THIS tournament. If they want to give special exemptions to a tourney, make it the US Open or World Championship. Not the T of C. The PBA needs to keep this tournament "sacred" while taking the tour in a new direction. If you know anything about the T of C you'll better understand my opinion.

Eric

1/24/2010 1:59:50 AM #

It's a sad day for the PBA. I was thinking you had to be a PBA champion to even qualify to bowl in the event. I take nothing from Kelly whatsoever. What I'm saying is that the powers that be think that bowling is at the point where something like this had to happen to try to attract people to watch. Again, congrads to the champion, but this isn't good. Standards have been compromised.

"Tournament of Champions"--Kulick earned a berth in the Tournament of Champions, by WINNING THE Women’s World Championship last September, the first PBA women’s major tournament.

Hmmm, a World Championship sponsored by the PBA (the one running the TOC) but she didn't earn her right to be there?

Maybe you all should have read the entire story so you know what you are talking about in the first place.

"A Bowler":
If you don't know the history behind the T of C, you shouldn't put in your 2 cents. The T of C was open to winners of PBA events. NOT Women's Series events, not Senior events, not Regional events. Kelly outbowled everybody last week. She earned the win. She made history. I am not taking anything away from her. I would have the same feelings about this if Harry Sullins or Wayne Webb would have won. They also earned "special" exemptions. The integrity of the T of C is what I'm standing up for.

My only gripe is that if Chris Barnes or Tommy Jones or one of the other top male bowlers entered a woman's tournament, there would no doubt be a huge outpouring of complaints that they didn't belong. Yet when the women compete in a mens tournament, it is accepted as ok. Granted, for the women it is their only opportunity to compete at the professional level since their tour was disbanded. And the name PBA Tour makes no mention of gender, that it is for guys only, yet something just doesn't seem right seeing the women competing with the men. Male arrogance perhaps? Or maybe only because we are not used to it. Bowling is the kind of SPORT that has shown that on any given day anyone can compete successfully against anyone. Carolyn, Liz, Kelly, Michelle Feldman, and all the other great women bowlers have shown that if they are on they can beat any guy out there. Kelly's victory finally proved that. So where do we go from here? Maybe it's finally time to address the gender disparity head on. If the women can't bowl on their own circuit, why should they be deprived of bowling with the guys, especially since it is nowhere stated that they can't. Open the PBA up to both sexes or give the women back their LPBT. There's too much talent out there being unfairly denied the opportunity to exhibit itself and earn an income from it.

Marc Krasner

1/24/2010 8:49:02 AM #

I guess we can say that bowling is truly NOT a sport. But a game in which women can beat the men at the highest level. Nothing wrong with that. But it's just not Football, Baseball, Golf...etc.

IT'S ABOUT TIME THAT WOMEN BEGAN TO GET SOME RECOGNITION IN THE BOWLING WORLD.  BACK IN THE 70'S AND 80'S AND EVEN THE 90'S IT WAS ALL ABOUT THE MEN.  GOOD FOR KELLY!  YOU GO GIRL!

Kelly, congratulation on a spectacular performance; job well done by any measure!

Now, for all the whiny, small minded, wanna be, no-nothing-in-actuality, purest, elitest hacks.....grow up! What a bunch of tripe.  Seriously, every major sport in the world has undergone significant changes in format, rules, guidelines, qualifications, etc. over the past 20-40 years. No point in moaning over designated hitters, etc. The games move on. There is nothing so sacred about the TOC such that a change in qualification for participation, to recognize other significant achievment, somehow diminishes the significance of the event or the sport. If the truth hurts, so be it....you're idiots, plain and simple.

Similarly, if anyone has benefited from the technology changes in coverstock and core combinations to the bowling ball...it is hard throwing, high rev men.  It greatly increases the margin of error, thereby allowing less accurate players to overpower the conditions and compete on par with players of greater skill.  You want to cry out for tradition and sanctity...go back to urethane and see how well your current "hook in a box" average holds up. The conditions of the tournament were the same for everyone there...the entire week.  For Kelly to persevere, survive and eventually win...she had to pass a lot of people who all possess tremendous talent at adjusting releases, speed, etc. to accommodate what the lanes throw at them. Its the nature of the sport, and what truly defines a champion.  History be damned...times change and the sport moves on...and this time with a first ever woman champion.  I personally applaud the PBA tour, the TOC, and all who participated...for a great and memorable event.

I now realize how f#$%^$g stupid people really are !! If anybody who was watching closely.....the CATS system showed that her ball speed was actually 1 MPH FASTER than Chris "the chokemaster" Barnes ! She proved that she HAS the power to compete with the men !  The men are all just mad because they can't beat Kelly or many, many other women for that matter .  Kelly just has pure TALENT , she deserved to be there, and WON a true SPORTING championship !!!  Enough said !  If anyone has any comments other than CONGRATULATIONS, they should really just shut the f#@$k up !

Signed,
A male pro bowler who can't beat Kelly.

You said: "If you don't know the history behind the T of C, you shouldn't put in your 2 cents. The T of C was open to winners of PBA events. I've been bowling now in league play only for 38 yrs and we up in Canada don't get to see the PBA finals on tv too much anymore, but when I saw they were televising it on Sunday, I had to watch and I'm sure glad I did, not only was the bowling exciting but to also watch history in the making.
Kelly you mentioned that your legs felt numb after every shot, I have the problem when trying to make the big shot and stay focused that I get nervous and lose my arm swing.  If you read this please give me a pointer or two on how to correct this.

Kelly,
Once again another amazing accomplishment. As the director of the NJ Jr Gold Sport Travel League, with separate boy and girl divisions sending over 2 dozen+ youth bowlers to JOG Nationals, the girls need to see hope for their future in bowling and you have become their role model. Many, like me, remember your journey to the top! Some have had lessons from you at Ritgers, and all of them cheered you on as you bowled in different arenas! Best of luck to you and continued success on the lanesSmile

My wife and I were thrilled with your win. I always knew you could compete against the men.  You are one of the very few women bowlers I've seen who has enough "ball" to play anywhere on the lane.  You brought bowling some much needed publicity.  Don't pay any attention to some of the illogical comments about men competing in women's tournaments etc.  There will always be insecure chauvinists

Kelly Kulick did an excellent job at owning her own performance and staying within her own game despite all of the pressure and media attention she is getting. As a message to all athletes and to Kelly herself, I encourage people like Kelly Kulick to continue working on their own games, focusing on their own game plans, and continuing to believe in themselves as they progress in sport and life.

Kelly, you are truly a role model for ALL athletes, showing that the individual has the power to call their own shots in both sport and life.

To everyone: continue to practice, own your performance - whether it is good or bad. Since it is YOU that takes ownership, it is YOU who decides how well you will perform, which could lead to desirable results.

Kelly.
I was a student at Ritger's Bowling Academy for the instructors course and you were one of the Instructors that taught me during that course. I cannot believe some of the comments that are being posted on your winning the ToC. These people have to be 1 or 2 night league bowlers that do not understand the amount of physical and MENTAL stress that you went through last week just getting to the t.v. finals. The stress that you had to be feeling while bowling on t.v. had to be enormous and to make shot after shot like you did for 2 matches was absolutely great beyond belief. Congratulations on such a wonderful achievement and I know that Dick Ritger and the staff in Ithica, N.Y. are so proud of you. Thank you for being an instructor and i hope that you keep winning for many more years.

I said it before and I will say it again, MEDIA OUTLETS--GIVE KELLY THE RESPECT SHE DESREVES-- she is a true champaion in the SPORT of bowling, I still do not see many newspapers, news medias, reporting on this great feat in history in the SPORT of bowling. As a  past regional player I know what you have to do on a weeked no less ALL WEEK LONG, just look at some of the BOWLING ATHELETES HANDS, THUMBS, FINGERS, wrist and tell me this is easy for any man or woman, I know many personal friends that "decided to go on tour" that had book averages of 225 and over and washed out frist round.  SO MY HAT IS OFF TO ALL PBA/ LPBA members for the acheivements in this SPORT of bowling,
That's right--- I think I said SPORT enough for you all to get the point! congrats kelly again and thanks for making our SPORT better.

To all you morons who want to belittle what Kelly Kulick has accomplished and/or don't consider bowling to be a SPORT, all I have to say to you is .... put your money where your mouth is. Come out and bowl in a PBA tour stop. You can enter the PTQ even as a non-member. Then, when you go home with your tail between your legs, the rest of us won't have to hear from you again. Obviously this is AMERICA and we are entitled to our opinions as you are. We have a life and I am PROUD OF MY DAD for being so happy for Kelly. He did have a tear in his eye for Kelly because she is one of his favorite bowlers to watch. As soon as I heard that you were going to be bowling to win the tournament, I called my 14-year-old son into the living room to watch and told him that history was about to be made.  I just had a feeling that you were going to win.  After you shut out Mika in the first match, I knew you were going to go all the way.  With the weight of the world on your shoulders, you stuffed ball after ball in the pocket with great poise.  I wish you success in future tournaments.

I only wish that I had been around the TV to see it! I heard about it and came to the site to read about it today.

It is sad to see that some people are talking about rules and regs, and what the guys are not allowed, etc.

For whatever reasons the men want to come up with, they lost to Kelly. She had every chance to lose or win that each of them did all week and she came out on top! There is nothing else to say... really.... is there?

I love reading posts about people telling us how great they bowl, their averages... blah blah blah   I am sure everyone on here bowls or has accomplishments. Guess what? NONE OF US bowls on those conditions, against the best bowlers in the world, proven winners, and does what they do as far as scores and performance.

Kelly is at this moment on top of the mountain, even if only till the next tournament. She's daBOMB! congrats.

It is always amazing how so many people show there ignorance when they try to talk about something they have no idea what it takes to win a tournament like Kelly did. Men especially are such wimps and have so much ego's that they just cannot take greatness for what it is.

Just like when a bowling center try's to put out a tough shot that would require some skill to shoot 200, but only alittle bit of skill and lane conditions that give you 5 to 10 lines for error. The complaing is unreal.

This girl is a true professional and if you even had one hint of all of the effort in practicing, working out, learning patterns, how balls react to the different conditions as the matches wear down the lanes all of you naysayers would close your mouth and put the stupidity back in that small head of yours.

As Chris Barnes said when you get to the finals of any tournament on the PBA tour you belong.

Congratulations to Kelly and hope that she starts a pattern where more professional women bowlers will start competing again.

Sincere Congratulations Kelly.  I have watched you since I was involved with Team USA and always knew you were a winner.  I used to say that you and Tammy Turner had the "stroke."  I listened in on the conference call and your intelligence, focus and goals are awesome.  We were all sitting in a room at the Sheraton in Arlington, TX and we were as nervous as you were (we had to get the wine out!)  We probably were one of a thousand parties that went on around the U.S.  My son in NJ was just awed at your steely performance.  We are all lifetime bowlers and I certainly hope your accomplishment does spur corporate America to pump some life back into women's bowling.
