Vanderhoef, Lee are PBA Scorpion Championship TQR Top Qualifiers

by PBA Editor August 21, 2009 19:00
Lee Vanderhoef of Greenville, S.C., and Sun Hee Lee of South Korea will lead a field of 13 men and four women, respectively, who will advance to the Professional Bowlers Association Scorpion Championship at Thunderbowl Lanes on Monday.

Vanderhoef posted a seven-game total of 1,537 pins to top a field of 73 in Saturday’s men’s Tour Qualifying Round while Lee’s 1,384 pins led the field of 17 women bidding for berths into the PBA Women’s Series presented by BOWL.COM event.

Advancing along with Vanderhoef were Steven Black, Phoenix, 1,519; Andres Gomez, Colombia, 1,471; Michael Cimba, Monroeville, Pa., 1,468; Jeffrey Roche, Dearborn, Mich., 1,447; Daniel Patterson, Utica, N.Y., 1,444; Jay Futrell, Derby, Kan., 1,443; Anthony LaCaze, Melrose Park, Ill., 1,442; Ken Simard, Greenville, S.C., 1,435; Martin Larsen, Sweden, 1,434; Andrew Cain, Scottsdale, Ariz., 1,431; Bo Goergen, Midland, Mich., 1,428, and Joseph Hostetler, Minerva, Ohio, 1,422.

Three extra spots in the PBA Scorpion Championship field were awarded after exempt tour players Tommy Delutz Jr., Danny Wiseman and Dave Arnold withdrew and two additional women’s spots were awarded after Carolyn Dorin-Ballard and Lynda Barnes withdrew.
In addition to Lee, women advancing to Monday’s qualifying rounds are Tina Stickney, Chandler, Ariz., 1,359; Andrea Lucente, Youngstown, Ohio, 1,358, and Adrienne Miller, Albuquerque, N.M, 1,357.

Miller had the most exciting day, winning a one-game roll-off with South Korea's Mi Jung Cha to earn her spot.

"In the roll-off, Mi Jung stayed close through five frames,” Miller said. “I made a mental mistake and missed a 10 pin spare in ninth frame. She had to double to win it in the tenth frame and didn't do it.

"I was exempt last year and I put a lot of self-pressure on myself,” Miller added. “I’m going out on Monday and just try to enjoy the challenge to meet rather than the threat of defeat."

The 72-player men’s Scorpion Championship, the fifth event in the PBA World Series of Bowling, will include 59 exempt players who will bowl two seven-game qualifying rounds on Aug. 24 beginning at 8 a.m. The top 28 men and the top eight women will advance to single-elimination best-of-seven game matches on Aug. 25, with the Round of 8 starting at 7:30 p.m.

The Scorpion Championship finals will be taped on Sept. 6 at Thunderbowl Lanes and aired on ESPN Nov. 29 at 1 p.m. Eastern.
