International Stars Advance in Viper Championships Match Play

International bowling standouts Jason Belmonte of Australia  and Shalin Zulkifli of Malaysia are among the match play survivors in the PBA Viper Championship and PBA Women’s Series presented by BOWL.COM Viper Championship at Thunderbowl Lanes.
Two-handed specialist Belmonte, trying for his second PBA Tour title, heads into this evening’s Round of 8 which will determine the four Viper Championship semifinalists who will return on Sept. 5 for the semifinal and championship matches.
The 26-year-old Belmonte defeated Bo Goergen of Midland, Mich., 4-1 in the best-of-seven game Round of 16 match where both bowlers struggled.
“For both of us it was an extremely tough pair,” Belmonte said. “The only reason I won was because I had a lot of luck. I had a couple of 200 games that could have easily been 160 or 180.”
Also advancing into the Round of 8 was seven-time Tour titlist and top qualifier Steve Jaros of Yorkville, Ill., who defeated George Lambert of Canada, 4-0.
“I’m not trying to bowl huge games, just fill frames,” Jaros said. “I’m relying on using a less-aggressive ball and making adjustments with my speed.”
Those eliminated from the tournament in the Round of 16 were Hall of Famer Pete Weber, reigning PBA Player of the Year Wes Malott and 2007-08 Player of the Year Chris Barnes.
Zulkifli, one of the world’s top women players with 30 international titles, defeated 20-time professional titlist Carolyn Dorin-Ballard of Keller, Texas, 4-0 in her best-of-seven Round of 8 match.
“I was surprised to win it in four games,” Zulkifli said. “I couldn’t take anything for granted because no matter how far down Carolyn is, she can come back.”
Others advancing to the Women’s Series Viper Championship Round of 4 were 2009 PBA Women’s Tour Trials winner Shannon O’Keefe of Arlington, Texas; 12-time Team USA member Lynda Barnes of Double Oak, Texas and 12-time professional titlist Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y.
The Women’s Series Round of 4 will determine the finalist for the Women’s Series Viper Championship also to be conducted on Sept. 5.
Both tournaments are part of the five-week-long PBA World Series of Bowling that concludes Sept. 6. Sunday’s Round of 16 in the Viper Championship and Round of 8 in the Women’s Series event were conducted in Thunderbowl Lanes’ historic 20-lane arena.
The finals of both events will be taped on Sept. 5 at Thunderbowl Lanes for airing on ESPN Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. ET.
