Kerry Painter averaged 249.5 for eight games to take the first round lead Monday in the Professional Bowlers Association Senior Northern California Classic at Harvest Park Bowl.

Painter, of Henderson, Nev., had a 1,996 pinfall with games of 228, 207, 265, 258, 279, 258, 266 and 235 to hold a 45-pin lead over Ed Silva of Manteca, Calif., in second with 1,951. Rounding out the top five were Ray Cobb, Highland, Calif., 1,929; PBA Hall of Famer Ernie Schlegel, Vancouver, Wash., 1,869 and Terry Leong, Las Vegas, Nev., 1,852.

In his second full season on the Senior Tour, Painter has advanced to match play in the first four tournaments this season and his best tour finish was fourth in Brentwood two years ago.

I’m doing very well in qualifying but I need to turn it around in match play,” said the 56-year-old right-hander. “I’m losing the mental toughness and focus that you need in match play. But it’s a learning process and I’m learning more each week.”

The 84-player field will bowl another eight-game qualifying round Tuesday. The field will then be cut to the top 32 players who will advance to best-of-five match play beginning Wednesday. Match play continues all day on Wednesday with the Round of 8 and championship rounds scheduled for 5 p.m. Pacific.
