Kerry Painter retained his lead with a 3,814 16-game pinfall after second round qualifying Tuesday in the Professional Bowlers Association Senior Northern California Classic at Harvest Park Bowl.

Painter, who has a 238.3 16-game average, had a 1,818 eight-game pinfall Tuesday on games of 245, 215, 223, 241, 227, 173, 248 and 246 after bowling 1,996 to lead after Monday’s first round. He holds a 59-pin lead over Ray Cobb of Highland, Calif. and Ed Silva of Manteca, Calif., who are tied for second with 3,755.

Rounding out the top five are Tom Carter of Rockford, Ill., in fourth with 3,754 and Ron Mohr of Eagle River, Alaska, who won the first two Senior Tour events this season, in fifth with 3,748.

Painter, 56, of Henderson, Nev., is looking for his first Senior Tour title and is hoping to improve on his best Senior Tour finish of fourth two years ago in Brentwood. He has advanced to match play in the first four tournaments this season and it marks the second time he has been the qualifying leader.

The easy party is over and now I have to just continue to stay focused and make good shots,” said Painter. “I’ll be able to take advantage of two byes in match play tomorrow so I’ll be well-rested and will have plenty of time to prepare.”

As a result of being one of the top eight qualifiers, Painter will take advantage of two byes in match play Wednesday and will be seeded directly into the Round of 8.

The 84-player field has been cut down to the top 32 players who advance to best-of-five match play Wednesday. The Round of 8 and championship rounds are scheduled for 5 p.m. Pacific.
