Professional Bowlers Association charter member Bill Bunetta, one of bowling’s most respected instructors as well as a talented competitor on the lanes, celebrated his 90th birthday on Tuesday, Oct. 20, with family and friends.
Bunetta, who won his only PBA Tour title in Fairless Hills, Pa., in 1960, was a member of the E&B, Pfeiffers of Detroit, and Munsingwear of Chicago teams that contributed to his five American Bowling Congress Tournament titles between 1949 and 1955. He was inducted into the United States Bowling Congress Hall of Fame in 1968.
In 1996, at age 76, he became the oldest bowler in history to roll back-to-back 300 games.
“Bill’s health is not the best, but it’s OK for his age. His body is slowing down, but his mind is as sharp as ever,” said long-time friend Danny Ayers, who also noted Bunetta has retired from bowling and coaching.
Beyond his successes on the lanes, Bunetta may be best known for his innovative coaching systems and his years of conducting clinics and exhibitions. Bunetta is the creator of the “3-6-9” spare-shooting system that has become the industry standard.
