Zurich Earns Top Seed

Sam Zurich, the 2007 PBA Senior Rookie of the Year, and PBA Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia retained their positions as tournament leaders after final round
qualifying Wednesday in the USBC Senior Masters at Golden Pin Lanes.

Zurich, of Grant, Fla., led the 260-player field with a 3,304 15-game total, just nine pins ahead of Petraglia in second with 3,295.

In today’s block, Zurich, who won one Senior Tour title in 2007 and cashed in 10 of 12 events, had 1,041 for his five games after previous blocks of 1,102 and 1,161. He had games of 217, 201, 225, 195 and 203.

“I’m just glad to make it to match play, this is just a bonus,” Zurich said of his qualifying effort. “The only thing you can really take from qualifying into match play is to learn to stay on top of the changing conditions. Now we go one-on-one so it will be a different mindset.”

The field is now cut to the top 63 bowlers who will join defending champion Tom Baker in three-game, double-elimination match play which begins Thursday morning at 9 a.m. Match play continues all day Thursday and Friday with the championship match scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Friday. A bowler must be defeated twice to be eliminated from the
tournament.

Having won in 2006 and 2007, Baker, also a member of the PBA Hall of Fame, will be trying to become the Senior Masters’ first three-time winner.

Petraglia, of Manalapan, N.J., had games of 155, 234, 254, 197 and 242 in his final qualifying block on Wednesday.

“Because we were bowling on fresh oil this morning I had to make about a 10-board move inside after the first game,” said the lefthander, who owns six Senior Tour and 14 national tour titles. “The first two days I was playing from 10 to the 13 board.

“It was actually good that I had to make that adjustment because when match play starts tomorrow, it will be on a fresh condition and if I have to make a similar adjustment, I know I can play farther inside.”

The Senior Masters winner will take home a $16,000 first prize.
