Averaging 226.3, 2007 PBA Senior Tour Rookie of the Year Sam Zurich of Grant, Fla., leads after second round qualifying Tuesday in the United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters at Golden Pin Lanes.

Zurich, who won one Senior Tour title and cashed in 10 of 12 events in 2007, rolled 1,161 on games of 206, 206, 279, 235 and 235 in Tuesday’s five-game block to go along with his 1,102 in Monday’s qualifying.

“I’m making the right adjustments and ball changes at the right times so far,” said Zurich, who finished fourth in the 2007 Senior Masters. “I like the challenging lane conditions and the challenging format so hopefully my good fortune will continue.”

In addition to his Senior Tour title, Zurich owns two PBA Tour titles and 37 PBA Regional Tour titles.

Zurich holds a 50-pin lead over PBA Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia in second with a 2,213 10-game total.

“When the scores are lower the main thing is to avoid opens,” Petraglia said. “I stayed out of trouble and was clean in eight of the 10 games.”

Petraglia, a six-time Senior Tour and 14-time PBA Tour winner, is just off a win in the last Senior Tour event in May in Jackson, Mich.

“My game’s improved thanks to an old Cybervision instructional video Marshall Holman and I did years ago, Petraglia said. “After watching that and comparing it to a more recent video of me bowling, I could see my backswing was a full bowling ball higher than when I did the Cybervision video. I’ve been working on lowering my backswing which has improved my game.”

Senior Masters qualifying continues with the final five-game block on Wednesday. The field will then be cut to the top 63 players who will join defending champion Tom Baker in the three-game, double-elimination match play round beginning Thursday morning. Match play continues all day Thursday and Friday with the championship match scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Pacific time on Friday. The Senior Masters winner will take home a $16,000 first prize.
