The Dream Team

The pride of Buffalo and two of bowling’s greats will look to team up to win the PBA Ladies and Legends on Monday at The Cherry Bowl.

PBA Hall of Famer Tom Baker and 11-time Professional Women’s Bowling Association (PWBA) champion Liz Johnson led their respective divisions in the 2008 Columbia 300 PBA Ladies and Legends presented by MGD 64 and will team up Tuesday for the round robin match play portion of the event.

Baker fired a 290 in his final game to take over the top spot on the men’s side with a 2,813 12-game pinfall. He will join his fellow Buffalo native Johnson, who led the ladies side with 2,853.

Johnson (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) cruised to the top spot on the ladies side after averaging over 250 on Saturday, while Baker clawed his way up the standings Sunday to take the lead. Johnson is the two-time defending champion of the event, teaming up with Roger Kossert last year and Mike Kench the previous time the event was held in 1996.

The three-time reigning PBA Senior Player of the Year Baker, who will shoot for his first win of the year and ninth in the last four seasons, made a key ball change Sunday to go from sixth on Saturday to the overall lead.

“The day was like a yo-yo for me. I bowled a couple good games and a couple mediocre games. It was just a matter of carry,” Baker, who now lives in King, N.C., said. “Anyone can get to the pocket but if you don’t have the right roll and reaction, you can’t carry. I switched balls the last two games and shot 237 and 290. My other games this morning were just as good but I kept leaving the 10-pin.”

The Buffalo, N.Y., native will team up with his long time friend, Johnson to form a formidable team.

“We’re old buddies from Buffalo so it will be awesome to bowl with her,” Baker said. “She bowled really well last week at the USBC Queens and she bowls well in this house. It will be really nice to bowl with Liz.”

Heading into the final game Sunday, Baker wasn’t thinking about the top spot or teaming with his friend, he was just trying to get into the top five.

“I saw there were a lot of dead numbers around the top five so I knew I needed a 220 or 230 to get over those numbers and get into the top five,” Baker, a 10-time winner on the Denny’s PBA Tour, said. “I knew I had to get a big game, but I didn’t think I’d get that big of a game. I’ll take it.”

The top 24 advanced to Baker-style round robin match play on Monday. Ladies and Legends are paired up based on qualifying position.

The No. 2 team features Amy Stolz (Castle Rock, Colo.) and Kossert (Lithia, Fla.), who just missed teaming up with Johnson for the second consecutive year. The No. 3 team features PBA Women’s Series champion Joy Esterson (Annapolis, Md.) and Ron Mohr (Eagle River, Alaska) while Kelly Kulick (Union, N.J.) and Robert Harvey (Boise, Idaho) make up the No. 4 team.

The five-team stepladder finals take place Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. CT with the winning team taking home $15,000.
