Roger LeClair’s return to the site of his best career PBA Senior Tour finish is off to another good start.
Still searching for his first career PBA Senior Tour title, LeClair took the lead Tuesday after the first day of qualifying with a 1,783 eight-game pinfall in the 2007 PBA Senior Lake County Open at Olympia Lanes, a special place for the Clackamas, Ore., resident.
Two seasons ago in his rookie campaign, LeClair finished second to Gene Vincent at Olympia Lanes. LeClair, who ended up second in the PBA Senior Rookie of the Year voting to PBA Hall of Famer Tom Baker that season, has since posted several top-five finishes on the Tour but has never been able to get over the hump. Last season, he endured a stretch of three consecutive fifth-place finishes to start the season.
On Tuesday, LeClair didn’t get off to a good start, shooting just 179 in game one. He bounced back with a 246 before dipping down below 200 again with a 194. A ball change in game four, however, resulted in a 244 average over the next four games on a day when the scoring pace was low.
“I went through three different balls in the first game. I was fortunate enough to shoot in the 240s the second game, but in game three the ball started going longer and longer so I switched to a Brunswick Blast Zone and it picked up a little earlier. I was able to have a nice run of games,” LeClair said. “I had good breaks and great carry. The last game I shot 188 but it could have been 150. I was fortunate to be clean and make my spares. Out here it really comes down to making spares.”
Tim Kauble (Marion, Ohio) is second with 1,774 while Baker (King, N.C.) is third with 1,768. Baker is looking for his third consecutive win which would tie the PBA Senior Tour record he set last season. After a slow start to the season, Baker has come on strong of late, winning the PBA Senior Northern California Classic and the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Senior Masters in consecutive weeks in July, the latter of which was his record fourth Major title in three seasons. He did not bowl in last week’s PBA Senior Council Bluffs Open.
Two-time PBA Senior Tour champion and last week’s runner-up Henry Gonzalez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) is fourth with 1,763. Ron Garr (Ridgedale, Mo.) rounds out the top five with 1,749.
The field of 135 will bowl another eight-game block Wednesday after which the field will be cut to the top 32 bowlers for Thursday’s match play. The final two bowlers will square off for the $8,000 top prize Thursday evening at Olympia Lanes at 7 p.m. CST.
