Kulick Survives Shark Attack

by PBA Editor August 14, 2007 19:00
The common observation Tuesday evening at the 2007 PBA Women’s Tour Trials was that Wednesday’s Shark oil pattern would separate the field and more clearly distinguish the top bowlers at the National Bowling Stadium.

That observation held true to form as Kelly Kulick, who made history last season as the first-ever exempt female bowler on the Denny’s PBA Tour, continued her stronghold on the field, leading for the second consecutive day with a three-day, 24-game pinfall of 5,243.

Kulick (Jackson, N.J.) posted an eight-game pinfall of 1,734 in the third round of competition at the Tour Trials, which are being held in conjunction with the 2007 U.S. Women’s Open, a United States Bowling Congress (USBC) event.

“I didn’t take a lot of risks and generally played smart today,” said Kulick, who said Tuesday she planned to play it safe on the Shark pattern. “Every time I wanted to make a ball change, I held off and I was able to keep going at a good pace. My spare game was great until the final game. I didn’t miss a single spare in the first seven games and that’s key on a pattern like this.”

Kulick opened the block with four consecutive scores over 215, dropped to 196 in the fifth before rebounding with scores of 269 and 225 in games six and seven. Kulick closed the round with her lowest score of the day, 160.

Tied for second, 122 pins behind Kulick, are Wendy Macpherson (Henderson, Nev.) and Michelle Feldman (Skaneateles, N.Y.) with 5,121. Macpherson posted the day’s highest eight-game block with 1,800.

Shannon Pluhowsky (Phoenix, Ariz.) is fourth after posting 1,692 on Wednesday for a 24-game pinfall of 5,108.

Monday’s leader Stefanie Nation (Orlando, Fla.) is sixth with 5,013.

The entire field returns Thursday for the fourth and final eight-game block, bowling on the Chameleon oil pattern beginning at 10 a.m. PT. The top 16 women after Thursday’s fourth round, based on a 32-game pinfall will earn exemptions for the 2007 PBA Women’s Series.

The 2007 PBA Women’s Series, which is sponsored by the USBC, marks the first opportunity for women to bowl on Tour since the Professional Women’s Bowling Association (PWBA) folded in 2003. The series will feature 16 women competing in four events which will run concurrently with four Denny’s PBA Tour events. All events will feature a $51,100 prize fund including a $10,000 top prize.
