Kulick Tames the Scorpion

by PBA Editor August 13, 2007 19:00
After getting a taste for the Denny’s PBA Tour as the first-ever exempt female bowler, Kelly Kulick has the desire to return to the top and is positioning herself to do so as the leader in the 2007 PBA Women’s Tour Trials, which are being held in conjunction with the 2007 U.S. Women’s Open, a United States Bowling Congress (USBC) event, at the National Bowling Stadium.

The Tour Trials, which grant exemptions to the top 16 women for this fall’s PBA Women’s Series, feature a field of 65 women with Kulick leading the way with a two-day, 16-game pinfall of 3,509.

Kulick (Union, N.J.) opened the day with a 225 and after dropping a 169 in the second game, caught fire. Kulick averaged 258.25 over the next four games including a 289 in game six and finished with the day’s top round, an eight-game pinfall of 1,804, on the Scorpion oil pattern.

“On Tour, this pattern was probably my worst. I drilled a new ball and it seemed to match up well for me today,” said Kulick. “From being out on the Denny’s Tour, I have an idea of how all the patterns play. I’ve also had a solid year of practice and my game is sharp right now and it showed at the USBC Queens.”

In second is Michelle Feldman (Skaneateles, N.Y.), who posted 1,786 on Tuesday, for a 16-game pinfall of 3,485. Feldman led heading into the eighth and final game, but a 7-10 split in the eighth frame gave Kulick the lead.

Carolyn Dorin-Ballard (North Richland Hills, Texas) rounds out the top three with 3,447 after posting 1,697 on Tuesday.

Monday’s leader Stefanie Nation (Orlando, Fla.) is 10th with 3,320.

The entire field returns Wednesday for the third of four eight-game blocks, bowling on the Shark oil pattern beginning at 10 a.m. PT. The top 16 women after Thursday’s fourth round, based on a 32-game pinfall, and who have paid the additional PBA Women’s Tour Trials entry fee will earn exemptions for the 2007 PBA Women’s Series.

The 2007 PBA Women’s Series, which is sponsored by the USBC, marks the first opportunity for women to bowl on Tour since the Professional Women’s Bowling Association (PWBA) folded in 2003. The series will feature 16 women competing in four events which will run concurrently with four Denny’s PBA Tour events. All events will feature a $51,100 prize fund including a $10,000 top prize.
