Baker Survives

by PBA Editor July 10, 2007 19:00
Defending champion Tom Baker’s road to a second consecutive USBC Senior Masters is already a lot smoother than the path he took to last season’s crown.

The PBA Hall of Famer, who won a record 12 matches en route to the 2006 USBC Senior Masters title, won his first two matches Wednesday to stay in the winner’s bracket in the second of two Major events on the PBA Senior Tour.

The two-time defending PBA Senior Player of the Year made history last summer when he took home both Major titles and won a record-tying four titles overall. It was his performance in the USBC Senior Masters, however, that was the crowning jewel in an historic season. After winning his first match, Baker lost his second to fall into the loser’s bracket, but he won a staggering 11 matches in a row to win the title.

As the defending champion, Baker earned a bye through the three rounds of qualifying and joined the top 63 in double elimination match play, which features three-game matches. As the No. 32 seed, Baker defeated No. 36 Matt Surina (Everett, Wash.), 613-535, in his first match before knocking off No. 4 Kevin Croucher (Grants Pass, Ore.), 652-582, in the second match. Croucher led the first two days of qualifying but slipped to fourth in Wednesday’s final round to fall into Baker’s side of the bracket.

Baker (King, N.C.) has already surpassed the efforts of the last two defending champions in the USBC Senior Masters. Two seasons ago, Gary Dickinson lost his first two matches, while last season Vince Mazzanti Jr. won his first match before dropping the next two. Baker is looking to become just the second bowler to repeat as Senior Masters champion. Dave Davis accomplished the feat in 1995 and ’96.

Making history Wednesday was Robin Romeo, who not only became the first woman to make match play in a USBC Senior Masters, she also won both her matches. Romeo (Newhall, Calif.) defeated No. 7 Mark Glover (Woodbridge, Va.), 657-551, in her first match and No. 27 Roger LeClair (Clackamas, Ore.), 616-550, in her second match. Romeo advances to face No. 11 Sam Zurich (Grant, Fla.), another PBA Senior Tour rookie who owns one title this season, the PBA Senior Northern Illinois Classic.

The top two seeds fell Wednesday evening, with No. 1 seed Henry Gonzalez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) falling to No. 29 Danny Carbone (Broomfield, Colo.) in the winner’s bracket, 613-608, while No. 3 Dennis Psaropoulos (Lake Worth, Fla.) fell in his first match to No. 63 Hugh Miller (Marcos Island, Wash.), a PBA Senior Tour rookie who won seven titles on the Denny’s PBA Tour, 615-542. Psaropoulos was then eliminated with a tough 622-621 loss to No. 26 Sam Carter (BenLomond, Calif.).

Match play continues Thursday and Friday, with the championship match taking place Friday, July 13 at Noon PST. The winner will take home $16,000 and a berth in the 2008 PBA Tournament of Champions. Non-PBA members, however, are not eligible for the Tournament of Champions.
