Shreve, Pluhowsky Take Top Spots

by PBA Editor May 8, 2007 19:00
With one of the strongest fields in bowling on the lanes at The Cherry Bowl this week, it’s no wonder bowlers aren’t concerned with who they’re matching up with for the doubles portion of the event.

Nevertheless, John Shreve Sr. and Shannon Pluhowsky will go into Thursday’s match play as the team to beat after leading the Legends and the Ladies sides, respectively, after three days of qualifying in the 2007 PBA Hammer Ladies and Legends presented by the Illinois State Bowling Proprietors Association.

Pluhowsky (Phoenix, Ariz.), who led the ladies’ side from start to finish, has been the most consistent and dominating player in the event thus far. She finished qualifying with a 3,598 15-game pinfall for a 239.87 average, including a 268 in game two Wednesday to solidify her hold on the top spot. She’ll team up with Shreve (Elyria, Ohio) for Baker-style round robin match play in which payers alternate shots each frame. Shreve finished qualifying with 3,698.

Finishing second on the Legends side was Don Patterson, who has had a big week, including his first career 300 game Tuesday, to make a charge up the standings. Patterson will team up with Amanda Burgoyne (Newport, Minn.), but took the same attitude nearly every other bowler did in this week’s event.

“I wouldn’t care if it was the 24th-place bowler, I’m happy just to make the cut,” Patterson (Knoxville, Tenn.) said. “The field in this building is outstanding and the scores are so good that anybody could do it any time. Realistically, I am thrilled to bowl with anyone.”

Liz Johnson, who teamed up with Mike Kench to win the last Ladies and Legends event in 1996, made a big run Wednesday to move up to fourth on the ladies side. Her 253 average Wednesday was second only to PBA Hall of Famer Steve Cook, who averaged 257.80 Wednesday, including two games of 279 and one 278.

“It’s kind of come full circle since this was my first title, singles and doubles,” said Johnson (Cheektowaga, N.Y.), who will team up with Roger Kossert (Lithia, Fla.). “I’ve been battling a cold and I’ve felt terrible but it actually kept me slow. I found a ball that gave me better carry and I made better shots today. I felt like I was in a little bit of a zone and everything kind of came together for me today.”

Cook (Granite Bay, Calif.) moved up to fifth with 3,588 and will team up with Kelly Kulick (Union, N.J.), who made history this year as the first woman ever to bowl full-time on the Denny’s PBA Tour. Kulick finished fifth on the ladies side with 3,399.

PBA Hall of Famer Mark Roth, who is bowling in his first PBA Senior Tour event since 2003, finished 19th with 3,395 and will match-up with Sherree Monaco (Carpentersville, Ill.).

Match play gets underway Thursday at 10 a.m. CT. The top five teams after the 24 games of Baker-style match play will advance to the stepladder finals Thursday evening at 7 p.m. CT. The winning team will take home $15,000.
