Looking Like a Legend

by PBA Editor May 7, 2007 19:00
With no women’s tour to bowl on full time, Shannon Pluhowsky will just have to settle for dominating any tour she can find.

The seven-time Team USA member took the overall lead Tuesday in the 2007 PBA Hammer Ladies and Legends presented by the Illinois State Bowling Proprietors Association, finishing atop the field of 127 PBA Senior Tour bowlers and 50 of the top women bowlers.

Pluhowsky (Phoenix, Ariz.), who finished with a 2,483 10-game pinfall for a 248.30 average, has so far beaten out the likes of PBA Hall of Famers Tom Baker, David Ozio, Johnny Petraglia and Mark Roth in the PBA Senior Tour’s second event of the season.

The left-hander blew away the ladies’ field, leading the next-highest finisher, Team USA teammate Amanda Burgoyne, by 180 pins. Burgoyne (Newport, Minn.) finished second with 2,302.

Pluhowsky opened her five-game block Tuesday with a 226 before games of 246, 269 and 276. She finished with a 222 to take the overall lead.

John Shreve Sr. (Elyria, Ohio) leads the Legends’ side after averaging 252.80 Tuesday, including a 299 in his third game of the day. He finished the first two days with a 2,468 10-game pinfall and will look to stay in the top spot which would team him with Pluhowsky for Thursday’s match play should she maintain her lead. The top 24 seniors and top 24 ladies will pair up for round robin match play based on qualifying position.

“She throws a great ball and is really on top of her game right now. I would take her,” Shreve said of Pluhowsky. “But I’ve seen a lot of great ladies out there. It’s a good idea to run these kinds of tournaments and give them a chance to get back on their feet. They deserve it and they’ve earned it. They’ve bowled some big games out here. I have too so whoever I get they’ll be stuck with me too.”

The 58-year-old Shreve is looking for his first career PBA Senior Tour title. He owns just one PBA title, a PBA Senior Regional Tour doubles event in 2001.

“That would be a great thing especially because of all the great bowlers that are out here,” Shreve said of winning his first title. “There are a lot of guys who have been out here for a long time and a lot of great new bowlers and the competition is getting tougher and tougher.”

Don Patterson (Knoxville, Tenn.) fired a 300 game Tuesday to move into second with 2,456 heading into the final day of qualifying.

On the ladies side, 20-time Professional Women’s Bowling Association (PWBA) titlist Carolyn Dorin-Ballard (N. Richland Hills, Texas) is third with 2,285, while Kelly Kulick (Union, N.J.), last year’s history-making exempt bowler on the Denny’s PBA Tour, is eighth with 2,209.

The final five-game qualifying round will take place Wednesday after which the field will be cut to the top 24 legends and top 24 ladies. The top five teams after match play will advance to the stepladder finals Thursday evening at 7 p.m. CT.
