On the Mark

At 56 years old and five years removed from his last PBA Senior Tour title, PBA Hall of Famer Mark Roth is still proving why he’s one of the greatest bowlers to ever play the game.

Roth, whose last PBA Senior Tour title came in the 2002 PBA Senior World Championship, earned the top seed for match play in the 2007 PBA Senior Dayton Classic, finishing the two days of qualifying as the overall leader with a 3,663 16-game pinfall.

As one of the top eight bowlers after qualifying, Roth will earn a bye into Tuesday’s Round of 16, bypassing the Rounds of 32 and 24.

“That’s huge. When I bowled out here before we didn’t have that advantage and we had to bowl all day so this is very nice,” Roth, who prior to this season had not bowled on the PBA Senior Tour since 2003, said. “They’ve made some changes to the format out here and, to me, that’s a good change.”

It took Roth a while to get going Tuesday, but when he did he was hard to stop. He started with games of 214, 224 and 187 before bouncing back with a 288 in game four and a 264 in game five. After games of 199 and 211, Roth finished with a 258 to hold on to the lead.

“I like this oil. I actually used balls that weren’t supposed to work on this pattern and tried to keep the ball straighter and keep my speed down,” Roth said. “Speed is critical on this long oil pattern.”

Dale Eagle (Tavares, Fla.), who ranks fourth all-time with 10 PBA Senior Tour titles, finished right behind Roth in second with 3,638. Mitchell Jacbczenski (Novi, Mich.) finished third with 3,613, George Miller III (Grand Rapids, Mich.) was fourth with 3,583 and PBA Hall of Famer David Ozio (Beaumont, Texas) rounded out the top five with 3,560.

Also earning byes into the Round of 16 were Sam Maccarone (Glassboro, N.J.), Jay Aono (Boise, Idaho) and Rohn Morton (Vancouver, Wash.). Morton edged out two-time defending PBA Senior Player of the Year Tom Baker for the final bye into the Round of 16, marking the second consecutive week Baker (King, N.C.) has finished ninth in qualifying.

John Hunt (Grayling, Mich.) finished 32nd, just one pin ahead of Ted Staikoff (Black Hawk, S.D.) to earn the final spot in match play, which gets underway Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. ET.

Match play is best-of-five games until the format switches to best-of-three for the Round of 8, which gets underway at 6 p.m. The final four will bowl single-game matches immediately following, with the winner taking home $8,000.
