Slow-Zio

by PBA Editor May 19, 2007 19:00
As a fast-talking, hard-throwing Texas native, it’s hard to get David Ozio to do anything slowly.

The PBA Hall of Famer was able to slow down his ball speed Sunday, however, to take the lead after the first day of qualifying in the 2007 PBA Senior Dayton Classic at Capri Bowling Lanes with a 1,856 eight-game pinfall and a 232.00 average.

Ozio started the day games of 193 and a 211 before making a ball change which resulted in games of 255 and 269. He stayed with the ball the remainder of the round, finishing with a 258 to take the overall lead.

“On this pattern you have to slow it down and hook it to get the extra pin carry and I really only had one game where I didn’t have good pin carry,” Ozio (Beaumont, Texas) said. “I like to throw the ball hard so it’s hard for me to pull my speed back and get my roll rate up, but I managed to do that today.”

Ozio captured the season-opening PBA Senior Manassas Open in Manassas, Va., for his second career PBA Senior Tour title three weeks ago. After bowling part-time his first three seasons on Tour, he’s bowling full-time this season and looking to add a PBA Senior Player of the Year award to his 2004 PBA Senior Rookie of the Year hardware.

“I’ve been bowling well this whole segment but the issue is doing it in the right spots. I’ve been struggling the first two days lately and then bowling well the last day and it’s been too late,” Ozio said. “Today I struggled the first two games and then got it together so hopefully that pays off.”

Sam Maccarone (Glassboro, N.J.) led the evening squad and finished the day second overall with 1,822.

PBA Hall of Famer Mark Roth (Fulton, N.Y.), who is bowling on the PBA Senior Tour for the first time since 2003 and looking for his first title since 2002, finish third with 1,818.

Mitch Jabczenski (Novi, Mich.) finished fourth with 1,817 while Gary Hiday (Indianapolis, Ind.) finished fifth with 1,785.

All 139 bowlers will return Monday for the second eight-game block after which the field will be cut to the top 32 for Tuesday’s match play. The final two bowlers will square off for the $8,000 top prize Tuesday evening at Capri Bowling Lanes. The Round of 8 gets underway at 6 p.m. ET with the Round of 4 and Championship Round following immediately after.
