Painter's Touch

by PBA Editor April 28, 2007 19:00
Kerry Painter made a good impression in his first career PBA Senior Tour event as a PBA member Sunday at Bowl America Manassas.

The 54-year-old, who just became a PBA member this week, fired a 1,916 eight-game pinfall for a 239.50 average Sunday to take the lead after the first day of qualifying in the season-opening 2007 PBA Senior Manassas Open.

Painter finished 17th in last year’s 2006 PBA Senior Manassas Open as a non-member in his only other PBA Senior Tour event. His brother, Roger, is also competing this week as a non-member. Roger, from nearby Woodbridge, Va., got off to the better start between the two, firing a 266 in the opening game to Kerry’s 248. Kerry moved into second with games of 238 and 235 in games two and three.
He never dropped out of the top five over the final five games, finishing with a 268 to take the lead.

“It didn’t turn out too bad after it started in frustration. I had so much early on but couldn’t get anything for it,” said Painter (Henderson, Nev.). “The last game it all fell together for me. I had a good look all day and can’t complain about the start of the set, but the first four games I couldn’t break it for a big game.

“Games five, six and seven I must have left 15 smash 10-pins. I wasn’t being firm with it and maybe got tired and was just laying the ball down. On one shot I put a little more hand in it and the 10-pin popped out so the last two games I stayed firm with the shot and went 259-268.”

Dale Eagle (Tavares, Fla.), who sits fourth all-time with 10 PBA Senior Tour titles, is second with 1,895. Michael Lessar (Naples, N.Y.) is third with 1,885, while PBA Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia (Manalapan, N.J.), looking for his first PBA Senior Tour title since 2001, is fourth with 1,878.

Last year’s PBA Senior Manassas Open champion Henry Gonzalez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) is 15th with 1,808. Gonzalez has won the PBA Senior Tour’s season-opener each of the last two seasons after winning the 2005 PBA Senior Empire State Open and last year’s event at Bowl America Manassas over eventual 2006 PBA Senior Player of the Year Tom Baker. Baker sits one spot ahead of Gonzalez in 14th with 1,810.

All 142 competitors will bowl another eight games of qualifying on Monday after which the field will be cut to the top 32 for match play. The top eight bowlers will earn byes into the Round of 16. The final two will bowl for the $8,000 top prize Tuesday evening.
