The 2007-08 Denny’s PBA Tour has been a season marked with many changes and new events. One of those new events is the 2008 PBA Exempt Doubles Classic, which will take place Jan. 20-22 and Jan. 27 at Red Rock Lanes in Las Vegas.
The 2008 PBA Exempt Doubles Classic is open to all PBA members and amateurs, just like all other standard Denny’s PBA Tour events. The tournament will start Sunday, Jan. 20 with the Denny’s PBA Tour Qualifying Round from 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and will feature the same format as all other TQRs. The tournament will not move to a doubles format until match play on Tuesday.
A minimum of nine PBA members and one amateur will advance from the TQR to Monday’s Round of 64, which also maintains the same 14-game format as other standard events. The field will be cut to the top 32, who will advance to the doubles portion of the event.
On Tuesday, 16 teams will take part in a round robin doubles format. The teams will be formed based on qualifying totals, with the No. 1 qualifier teaming up with No. 2, the No. 3 qualifier teaming up with No. 4 and so on. All pinfall from qualifying will carry over.
The 16 teams will bowl 16 games of traditional round robin doubles with each team member bowling a complete game. Teams will receive 30 bonus pins for a team win. Each bowler will receive 10 additional bonus pins for beating their opponent resulting in a maximum of 50 bonus pins for each team in each game. For each game, the lower-seeded team will set the order of bowling. The higher-seeded team will set the individual match-ups.
The top four teams will then advance to the championship round which takes place Sunday, Jan. 27 following the live-ESPN televised finals of the 2008 H&R Block Tournament of Champions. The PBA Exempt Doubles Classic final round will air tape-delayed on ESPN on Sunday, Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. EST.
