Prime Time TV Format Announced

The PBA announced today the format for the championship round of the 2007 Lumber Liquidators Championship at AMF Country Club Lanes in Baltimore, Md., Sunday, Dec. 9. The event will air tape-delayed on ESPN from 8-10 p.m. EST.

The final round will feature eight bowlers, the first time a Denny’s PBA Tour championship round has featured as many as eight bowlers – other than Japan Cup competition – since the 2000 season when most events featured eight bowlers.

The Lumber Liquidators Championship will feature a round robin match play format, with the top eight bowlers advancing to the championship round on Sunday. Normally, the top five advance to the final round in standard round robin events.

In Sunday’s final round, bowlers who finished fifth through eighth after round robin match play will compete in a one-game play-in match with all four bowlers rolling one game at the same time. The bowler with the best score among the four will advance to the first stepladder match.

From that point, the final round takes on the usual stepladder format, with the winner of the play-in match taking on the No. 4 seed, followed by that winner taking on the No. 3 seed. The winner of that match faces the No. 2 seed with that winner advancing to the title match to take on the top seed.

The event will take place at AMF Country Club Lanes at 1 p.m. EST with the tape-delayed two-hour ESPN telecast airing at 8 p.m. EST.

The Lumber Liquidators Championship also marks the first time a Denny’s PBA Tour event has aired in primetime since the fall of 2001 when the final round of six events aired on Tuesday nights on ESPN. The last primetime event came on Oct. 30, 2001, when Baltimore native Danny Wiseman defeated Steve Jaros for the title in the Johnny Petraglia Open in North Brunswick, N.J. Wiseman made the finals of last season’s Beltway Classic at AMF Country Club Lanes, falling to eventual champion Sean Rash in the semifinals.

The 2007 Lumber Liquidators Championship gets underway Wednesday Dec. 5 with the Denny’s PBA Tour Qualifying Round followed by the Round of 64 on Thursday. The top 32 advance to round robin match play, which takes place Friday, Dec. 7.
