Eoff Continues to Lead

by PBA Editor October 23, 2007 19:00
Derek Eoff is bowling so well in the 2007 USBC Masters, several Denny’s PBA exempt players have suggested he should keep his day job.

The amateur Eoff continues to lead the first Major of the 2007-08 Denny’s PBA Tour, firing a 300 game Wednesday to finish with a 2,376 10-game pinfall heading into Thursday’s final round of qualifying.

Eoff (Milwaukee) is the USBC’s Sport Bowling Coordinator and is a member of Team USA, two reasons he has yet to join the PBA and attempt to earn an exemption.

“A lot of the guys out there are giving me a hard time and saying not to give up my day job,” Eoff said. “It’s funny because right now I’m not even playing my typical “A” game. I’ve changed some things lately and I’m using a softer release and so far it’s working out pretty well.”

Eoff didn’t get off to a strong start, shooting just 172 in the first game, but he rebounded with back-to-back games of 236 and was perfect in game four.

“I attacked the lanes completely wrong the first game. I got really fooled in practice and was too far inside,” Eoff, 27, said. “I had the right ball, I was just in the wrong spot, but once I moved right I was okay.”

Finishing second was Chris Loschetter (Avon, Ohio) with 2,362, followed by Dino Castillo (Carrollton, Texas) who fired the only other 300 game of the day and finished third with 2,343.

The 2005-06 PBA Rookie of the Year Bill O’Neill (Levittown, Pa.) is fourth with 2,312 while 2000 USBC Masters winner Mika Koivuniemi is fifth with 2,307. Koivuniemi won the season-opening Dydo Japan Cup two weeks ago.

Denny’s PBA Tour exempt bowlers dominate the next seven spots. Wes Malott (Argyle, Texas) is sixth with 2,298, 2005-06 PBA Player of the Year Tommy Jones is eighth with 2,264 and Greenfield, Wis., resident Chad Kloss, in his first season as an exempt bowler, is ninth with 2,260.

Lynda Barnes (Double Oak, Texas) finished as the highest woman in the standings, sitting 24th with 2,190. Barnes is the wife of eight-time Denny’s PBA Tour titlist Chris Barnes, who is 15th with 2,235. Two other women, Liz Johnson and Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, made the cut, finishing tied for 34th with 2,164.

There was a tie for the final spot into Thursday’s final qualifying round. The top 121 bowlers advance and Bobby Hall and Paul Bober tied for 121st. Hall earned the final spot with a 247-193 win in a one-game roll-off.

The top 121 bowl five more games Thursday morning before the field is cut to the top 63, at which point defending champion Doug Kent will join the field for match play. Double elimination begins Thursday evening and continues Friday until the field is narrowed to the final four bowlers.

The top four will advance to Sunday’s live ESPN televised finals at 1 p.m. ET at the Milwaukee Brewers’ Miller Park. The winner will take home $100,000 and a two-season Denny’s PBA Tour exemption.
