Billy the Kid

With title No. 42 off his back after last month’s Dydo Japan Cup 2006 win, Walter Ray Williams Jr. (Ocala, Fla.) is able to bowl without the pressure of becoming the career Denny’s Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour titles leader.

With the career title chase no longer on his mind, the 47-year-old looked to take control of the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Masters Wednesday in Milwaukee by firing a 2,317 10-game pinfall in the event’s qualifying rounds. It was 2005-06 PBA Rookie of the Year Bill O’Neill (Levittown, Pa.), however, who stole the show.

O’Neill finished with 2,391 after the fourth and final block of Wednesday’s qualifying overtaking the lead from the legend Williams. One of the “Young Guns” on Tour, O’Neill posted scores of 227, 199, 226, 270 and 256 in Wednesday’s five-game block.

O’Neill takes the top spot into Thursday’s final round of qualifying consisting of the top 124 bowlers of the original field of 498. They will bowl five games before being cut down to the top 63 bowlers plus defending champion Mike Scroggins.

“Every time I hit the pocket, I struck. When everything is going that well and the ball reaction is pretty good, it’s hard not to strike,” said O’Neill. “I made all my spares, so that doesn’t hurt either. I had a pretty big two last games, just finding the pocket and knocking the pins over.”

Williams began the day with a 235, added a 290 and 246 before ending the day with a 210 and 233.

Kelly Kulick (Union, N.J.), the first-ever female exempt bowler, finished 108th with a 2,053 while Billy Oatman (Chicago), the first-ever African-American exempt bowler, missed the cut by 33 pins with a 2,002.

The 2005-06 PBA Player of the Year Tommy Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.) threw a 2,237 to finish ninth while Norm Duke, the 2005-06 Denny’s PBA World Points Rankings leader and 2005 USBC Masters runner-up, rolled a 2,159 to finish 33rd.

The top four bowlers will advance to Sunday’s live ESPN televised finals at 1 p.m. ET at the Wisconsin Exposition Center. The winner will take home $100,000 and a two-season Denny’s PBA Tour exemption.
