Kretzer Cruises

by PBA Editor October 23, 2006 19:00
Brian Kretzer knows he has a long way to go, but he’ll gladly take his lead after the first day of the 2006 USBC Masters, the first Major event of the 2006-07 Denny’s PBA Tour.

Kretzer fired a 1,221 five-game pinfall Tuesday to lead the 497-bowler field after the first of three days of qualifying.

“It’s nice to get as many pins as you can the first couple days. They don’t mean a whole lot once you get to match play, but at least it takes some pressure off,” Kretzer (Dayton, Ohio) said. “You’re going to draw a great bowler in the top 64 no matter what, so it doesn’t matter where you finish. I’m just doing my job and trying to get in the top 63.”

The field will be cut to the top 124 bowlers after Wednesday’s five games. Those 124 will the bowl an additional five games Thursday, after which the top 63 will join defending champion Mike Scroggins in double elimination match play, as Scroggins earned a bye through qualifying.

Kretzer, who has not won a Denny’s PBA Tour title in 96 career events, had games of 269 in game three and 279 in game four.

Two bowlers making history this week stayed within reach of the cut after day one. Though this week’s event does not feature an all-exempt field, Kelly Kulick and Billy Oatman are bowling in their first events as the first female and African-American exempt bowlers, respectively.

Oatman (Chicago) is 110th with 1,033 and Kulick (Union, N.J) is 172nd with 1,006.

The 2005-06 PBA Player of the Year Tommy Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.) fired the day’s only 300 game. He finished fifth with 1,172. The 2005-06 PBA Rookie of the Year, Bill O’Neill (Levittown, Pa.) is second with 1,213.

The top four bowlers will advance to Sunday’s live ESPN televised finals at 1 p.m. ET at the Wisconsin Exposition Center. The winner will take home $100,000 and a two-season Denny’s PBA Tour exemption.

Two exempt bowlers dropped out of the Masters. Tommy Delutz Jr. stayed home with an elbow injury while Patrick Healey Jr. was a late scratch with the flu.
