Neff Defeats Hall of Famer to Advance to Round of 16

Steve Neff found a rhythm in his third game Thursday to beat Hall of Famer Gary Dickinson in the first round of match play in the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Suncoast Senior World Championship at Suncoast Hotel, Casino and Bowling Center. “I felt awful in the first game,” Neff said after the round of 32. “Finally in the third game, I started feeling good and things started flowing. I made some changes and adjusted in the nick of time – both on the lanes and with my equipment.” The match between Neff, a five-time Senior champion, and Dickinson went seven games. With a chance to win the match in the sixth game, Neff missed a mark in the tenth frame. Every game of the match was decided by less than 21 pins, with three of the games being decided by four pins (201-197, 189-194, 201-210, 210-206, 198-177, 224-228, and 225-208). Neff advances to face Donald Breihan in the Round of 16 on Friday at 9 a.m. in a best-of-five, single-elimination match. In the upset of the night, the leader for three of the qualifying rounds, Henry Gonzalez lost to the 32nd seed, Mel Wolf, in a seven game showdown. In the final game, Gonzalez had the opportunity to stay close if he threw a strike in the eighth frame. He couldn’t convert the spare and left the frame open, allowing Wolfe to win the match. Three matches were decided in four games – Vince Mazzanti Jr. eliminated Bob Hart, Darrell Storkson defeated Ross Packard and Mark Roth advances over John Tavano. Dave Soutar advances after Darwin Skrzynecki was forced to withdraw due to a knee injury during the third game. The round of 16 begins best-of-five, single-elimination match play today beginning at 9 a.m. The field is pared to eight, four and two. The final match starts at approximately 5 p.m. The champion takes home $20,000.
