Eagle Soars To The Top in Hammond Senior Open

HAMMOND, Ind. - Dale Eagle grabbed an early lead after the first round of qualifying in the PBA Senior Tour's Hammond Senior Open at Olympia Lanes. Eagle, Lewisville, Texas, averaged 234 through the nine-game round to finish in first place. The reigning PBA Senior Player of the Year, who owns six senior titles, has collected a nine-game, 2,106 pinfall total. Eagle, who is a former PBA Senior Rookie of the Year (1996), who posted two high games of 268 and no games below 208, is looking to improve on a high finish of sixth this year (Seattle). "I got lined up very early today," said Eagle, who used a Hammer Nasty Nail. "I put a little spin on my ball and I adjusted my speed to a medium-firm and I started bowling great." "Once I start bowling good, I really get into it and its hard to slow down," Eagle said. Trailing Eagle by 13 pins to sit in second place was Ray Johnson. Johnson, who owns no PBA titles, rolled a high game of 279. The Battle Creek, Mich., resident, who is competing in his second tournament of the year, is looking to improve on a career-high finish of 16th, which came last week in the Brunswick Senior National Championship (Jackson, Mich.). Third place belongs to Ron Amore, Washington Courthouse, Ohio. Amore, who is also targeting his first PBA title, registered high games of 263 and 258. He has felled 2,065 pins and is looking to make his first match play appearance of the year. Dave Soutar, Bradenton, Fla., captured fourth place. The PBA Hall of Famer, who has cashed in every tournament this year, has upended 2,054 pins. The 17-time national titlist, who also owns four senior titles, opened the round with a high game of 269. Dave Davis, West Balm Beach, Fla., ended the round in fifth. The PBA Player of the Year (1967) has toppled 2,046 pins. Davis, who won back-to-back ABC Senior Masters (Reno, Nev., 1995; Akron, Ohio, 1996), is an 18-time national champion and a four-time senior champion. Tying for sixth place was Dave Bernhardt, Washington, Mich., and Vince Range, St. Louis (2,037. Rounding out the top eight, with a 2,035 pinfall total was Frankie May, West Reading, Pa., and reigning PBA Senior Rookie of the Year Mike Pullin, Rochelle, Ill. The entire 151-man field will return Wednesday for the second round of qualifying. The top 24 will advance to match play with the first two rounds to be contested Thursday afternoon. The third round of head-to-head competition will be held Friday afternoon.
