MIKE J. LANESIDE: Thanksgiving Thanks

by MIke Jakubowski November 25, 2013 08:00

I am thankful that professional bowling has a presence on national television.

PBA TV SCHEDULE

PBA World Series of Bowling V coverage on ESPN begins Sunday Dec. 1 at 1 p.m. ET and continues Sundays through Jan. 19, 2014. Join yours truly in the play-by-play chair at South Point in Las Vegas with PBA Hall of Famer Randy Pedersen and Miss USA Kimberly Pressler. WSOBV coverage includes the four pattern championships leading up to the PBA World Championship, World Bowling Tour men’s and women’s finals, PBA50 Tour finals, PBA Regional Players Invitational finals and a $64,000 college scholarship to be earned at the Grand Championship of the Teen Masters.

I am thankful that a nationally-televised package of bowling on television showcases “The Greatest Bowlers in the World” on the PBA Tour, the greatest senior competition on the PBA50 Tour, the greatest regional players on the PBA Regional Tour, world competition on the World Bowling Tour and youth competition with PBA 2.0 and 3.0 Skill Balls for a life-changing college scholarship.

I am thankful to be involved with Xtra Frame, online Bowling Channel with my colleagues Jason Thomas, “The Bowling Guy”, “Internet Bowling Personality” Jef Goodger and “The Source” Matt Freiberg providing live coverage of PBA Tour events in addition to archived ESPN and CBS Sports Net shows. Please watch Xtra Frame’s new program, “The Bowling Center” available on the PBA YouTube channel on Mondays prior to Sunday’s television coverage.

Watch the premiere episode of “The Bowling Center” here.

I am thankful for the over 5,000 subscribers of Xtra Frame, online Bowling Channel – the most in the history of the service – who support the PBA on a monthly or yearly subscription.

I am thankful for the vision of Chris Peters, who personally saved the Professional Bowlers Association from the brink of extinction. I sincerely hope his extraordinary efforts are finally recognized with his overdue election to the PBA Hall of Fame this year.

I am thankful for the continuing commitment of PBA Board Members Rob Glaser and Mike Slade whose ongoing contributions keep the PBA Tour tradition and professional bowling in a national spotlight.

I am thankful for the support of the PBA’s product-registered companies, national and local sponsors and fans that have supported the Professional Bowlers Association through thick and thin. As thin as some folks want to paint it -- the PBA still has the best bowlers, the most opportunity, the most money, the most prestige and the only national television coverage of any bowling group in the history of the sport. No group has ever come remotely close to the contributions made by the Professional Bowlers Association, ever. No other group is doing so now or has plans to do so.

I am thankful for the immense passion, creativity and energy of PBA Tour Commissioner Tom Clark who stands in the constant firing line of criticism – fair and mean-spirited, expectations – realistic and fantastic, misinformation, rumor and myth surrounding the business of bowling.

I am thankful for the members of the Professional Bowlers Association, men and women who choose to compete on credible lane conditions whose national support of Regional and National competition provides the backbone for a true, professional, credible sport.

I am thankful for the dedicated staff of the Professional Bowlers Association.  Seattle office, road crew, player services, tournament staff, Xtra Frame crew, television production team, it is my privilege to serve with these talented people.

If you are inclined to tear apart this list – and many will be frothing to do so -- step back and for just one moment, be thankful for what we do have.  If it disappears, there will be nothing to be thankful for.

Happy Thanksgiving.

CBS Sports Network will present the GEICO Summer Swing Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. ET beginning June 11 through July 9.  Dave Ryan will join PBA Hall of Famer Randy Pedersen in the broadcast booth.

As the GEICO Summer Swing rolls on, let us spread the word and talk about it on Twitter #SummerSwing. The events, the format, the new lane conditions, the field, the wood surface at AMF Waukesha, the PBA Player of the Year race, CBS Sports Net, the return of Dave Ryan, the scoring paces, the winners and those who fail to win.

All of us, PBA, industry, partners, players, fans, Xtra Frame subscribers, friends, family together can take to Twitter, follow the scoring on PBA.com, watch the LIVE online Bowling Channel coverage and look forward to the CBS Sports Net shows.

The PBA, Xtra Frame and the PBA's YouTube Channel are offering fans a unique opportunity to prepare for Sunday's exciting ESPN finals of the Mark Roth/Marshall Holman PBA Doubles Championship from the WSOB.

The Mark Roth/Marshall Holman PBA Doubles Championship from the PBA World Series of Bowling airs Sunday March 25th on ESPN at 2:30 p.m. ET. Xtra Frame, online Bowling Channel, prepares fans for the doubles show with a great lineup of video programming.

First, fans can watch the Turbo Selection Show where the top 16 players from the WSOB Elite Players Championship are drafted to form doubles teams for the event, and see interviews with the newly formed teams.

Then, the extended 8-team stepladder begins with matches only seen on Xtra Frame and the PBA YouTube Channel.

Match 1: No. 7 seed Couch/DeVaney vs. No. 8 Scroggins/Dick Allen.
Match 2: The winner of Match 1 vs. No. 6 MacLelland/Ciminelli.
Match 3: The winner of Match 2 vs. No. 5 Belmonte/Weber.
The winner of the Match 3 advances to become the No. 5 seed on the ESPN show airing at 2:30 pm ET and will face No. 4 O'Neill/Fagan. The stepladder continues on the show with No. 3 Larsen/Gomez, No. 2 Duke/Malott and top seed Russell/Rash.

Will Rash get his first WSOB win after making every show to this point? Will the international team of Gomez/Larsen continue the unbelievable WSOB streak of international champions? Will Duke or Weber add to their growing number of historically significant titles?
