Walter Ray Wins USBC Senior Masters for First PBA50 Major Title

Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., used a fortunate strike in the final frame Friday to secure his first career United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters title.

The Hall of Famer carried a light shot that collapsed the 2-4-5 for a strike to defeat Jack Jurek of Lackawanna, N.Y., 240-219, to claim the title at South Point Bowling Center.

Heading into the final frame, Williams needed a strike to lock up the title or nine, spare, strike to secure at least a tie. Had he left anything less than nine on his first shot in the last frame, he would have lost.

"I thought I was going to leave the 2-4-5, and they just kept tumbling over," said Williams, who has 47 PBA Tour and eight PBA50 Tour titles in his career. "To get a strike and win with a hit like that is just crazy. I don't think I've ever done that in a title match."

Jurek stepped up in the 10th frame first and got just enough to put the pressure on Williams, who finished the match last. But it wasn't enough, as Jurek fell short of the title and added a runner-up Senior Masters finish to his two runner-up finishes at the USBC Masters.

In the semifinal, Williams took down fifth seed Mike Edwards of Tulsa, Okla., 237-214. Edwards defeated defending champion Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., 237-209, and opened the stepladder with a 254-184 win over Amleto Monacelli of Venezuela.

Williams earned $18,000 for the victory.

Field Down to 12 Players Heading Into Final Day of USBC Senior Masters

by Jason Thomas June 12, 2014 13:34

By Lucas Wiseman, USBC Communications

A dozen players are still in the hunt to win the title as the first day of match play came to a close Thursday at the 2014 United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters.

There are four undefeated players remaining in the winners bracket, while eight players are still alive in the elimination bracket. Competition resumes at 8 a.m. Pacific on Friday at the South Point Bowling Center.

The Senior Masters concludes Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. Pacific with the stepladder finals, which will be broadcast live on BOWL.com's BowlTV.

Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., Mike Edwards of Tulsa, Okla., Amleto Monacelli of Venezuela and Jack Jurek of Lackawanna, N.Y., made it through four matches without a loss on the opening day of match play.

Williams, who entered the double-elimination match-play bracket as the top seed, defeated Rob Cline of Spokane, Wash., 681-581, in his final match of the day.

"If I win one more match, I'm on the show for sure," Williams said. "Obviously, I want to be the top seed but the odds are pretty good that I'll make the stepladder at this point. I'm definitely bowling well, but so are a lot of other guys."

In Friday's winners bracket matches, Williams will battle Edwards, while Monacelli takes on Jurek. The winners of those matches will bowl for the top seed in the finals.

There are still eight players in contention in the elimination bracket, including PBA and USBC Hall of Famers Wayne Webb, defending champion Pete Weber and Brian Voss. Also still alive are Toby Contreras, Jim Starks, Rob Cline, Ricky Woods and Robert Brown.

All rounds of the Senior Masters are being broadcast live on BOWL.com's BowlTV. For more information on the event, visit BOWL.com/SeniorMasters.

W.R. Williams Leads Field of 64 Into USBC Senior Masters Match Play

by Jason Thomas June 11, 2014 13:45

By Lucas Wiseman, USBC Communications

After three rounds of qualifying at the 2014 United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters, Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., earned top qualifier honors heading into match play.

The PBA and USBC Hall of Famer finished with a 15-game total of 3,553 (236.8 average) to lead a field of 310 of the top senior bowlers age 50 and older at South Point Bowling Center.

The top 64 players after qualifying advanced to the double-elimination match-play bracket, which begins at 8 a.m. Pacific Thursday live on BOWL.com's BowlTV. The event concludes with the stepladder finals live on BowlTV on Friday at 3 p.m. Pacific.

Williams put together a huge third round to vault past Brian Voss of who had lead after the first two rounds. Williams fired 1,245 for five games Wednesday after shooting 1,149 in the opening round and 1,159 in the second round.

"I've been sick for a couple days now, and normally when I have a cold it doesn't affect my bowling very much, so hopefully I don't feel worse tomorrow," Williams said. "Once I get going, I loosen up and it's not so bad. Hopefully, I can continue bowling well."

Voss, who competed on the final squad of the day, had a chance to stay ahead of Williams in the final frame. Needing a double to lock up top qualifier honors, Voss left a split that dropped him down to third with 3,534.

Jack Jurek of Lackawanna, N.Y., qualified second with 3,540. Super Senior Jim Starks of San Bernardino, Calif., took the fourth position with 3,445.

Defending champion Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., who was guaranteed a spot in match play regardless of where he finished, ended up taking the No. 5 seed for match play. He finished qualifying with 3,432.

The final spot in match play went to Steve Anderson of Colorado Springs, Colo., who qualified in 64th position with 3,160. All rounds of the Senior Masters are being broadcast live on BOWL.com's BowlTV. For more information on the event, visit BOWL.com/SeniorMasters.

Voss Leads Weber After Second Round in USBC Senior Masters

by Jason Thomas June 10, 2014 14:05

By Lucas Wiseman, USBC Communications

Brian Voss maintained his lead after two rounds of qualifying at the 2014 United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters but defending champion Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., is lurking close behind.

Voss, a PBA and USBC Hall of Famer, popped a 298 game in Tuesday's second round and now leads with a 10-game total of 2,382 (238.2 average) at South Point Bowling Center. He is on top of a field of 310 of the top senior bowlers age 50 and older.

"I'm just bowling really well right now," Voss said. "I'm able to play straight when I have to, and I'm able to hook it when I have to. I'm pretty confident with a lot of aspects of my game right now."

Voss fired 1,207 in Monday's opening round and followed it up with 1,175 in the second round. He had games of 232, 208, 206, 298 and 231 on Tuesday. He started with 11 consecutive strikes in Game 4 before leaving the 6-10 on his final shot.

Just 25 pins off the lead is the defending champion Weber, who put together a huge second round. After opening the tournament with 1,144, Weber fired 1,213 in Round 2 to make a move up the leaderboard.

Jeff Prein of Stoughton, Wis., occupies the third position with 2,325, while Barry Zimmerman of Grand Forks, N.D., is fourth with 2,323. Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., moved up to fifth place with 2,308.

All participants will bowl 15 games of qualifying before the cut is made to the double-elimination match-play bracket. The top 63 players plus defending champion Weber will take part in bracket play beginning Thursday morning.

All rounds of the Senior Masters are being broadcast live on BOWL.com's BowlTV. For more information on the event, visit BOWL.com/SeniorMasters.

Brian Voss Averages 241 to Lead USBC Senior Masters After First Round

by Jason Thomas June 9, 2014 14:09

By Lucas Wiseman, USBC Communications

PBA and USBC Hall of Famer Brian Voss coming off a third-place finish in the PBA Senior U.S. Open posted the top score in the opening round of qualifying Monday at the 2014 USBC Senior Masters.

Voss had a five-game total of 1,207 (241.4 average) to lead the field of 310 of the world’s top senior bowlers age 50 and older at South Point Bowling Center.

"I've got my two sons, who are 21 and 23, with me for their first trip to Las Vegas, so that adds some incentive to bowl well," Voss said. "It's always nice to bowl well when you have family in town watching."

Voss fired games of 224, 246, 257, 266 and 214 en route to the overall lead after the opening round. All players return Tuesday for the second round, which begins live on BOWL.com's BowlTV at 8 a.m. Pacific.

Powered by the tournament's only 300 game, Mike Saville of Spokane, Wash., sits in second place with 1,183. Bo Goergen of Sanford, Mich., is third with 1,182, Jim Starks of San Bernardino, Calif., is fourth with 1,180 and Barry Zimmerman of Grand Forks, N.D., is fifth with 1,179.

All participants will bowl 15 games of qualifying before the cut is made to the double-elimination match-play bracket. The top 63 players plus defending champion Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., will take part in bracket play beginning Thursday morning.

The players are battling for a piece of the $144,400 prize fund. First place in the event pays $18,000.

All rounds of the Senior Masters are being broadcast live on BOWL.com's BowlTV. For more information on the event, visit BOWL.com/SeniorMasters.
